Samsung Speeds Up 'AI Transformation': Executive Evaluation Expansion Across All Affiliates

1. Introduction: Samsung’s Aggressive Push for AI Transformation (AX)

Samsung Group has officially accelerated its Artificial Intelligence Transformation (AX), transitioning from a pilot initiative within Samsung Electronics into a core evaluation metric applied across all group affiliates. In the upcoming year-end executive performance evaluations, major affiliates have significantly increased the weighting for AX capabilities—by up to tenfold. This strategic move aims to use AI integration as a primary yardstick for promotions and compensation, shifting focus from traditional metrics like sales and operating profit to tangible improvements in workflow efficiency and productivity.

2. Key Components of the New Executive Evaluation System (MBO)

According to business circles, affiliates have expanded the "AX Competency Enhancement" portion of their Management by Objectives (MBO) evaluations to a maximum of 20 points out of 100. This follows Samsung Electronics' earlier decision to raise its AX weighting to 20 points. To accommodate this, traditional financial performance weightings were reduced by 10 points, with other categories adjusted accordingly. The AX evaluation framework consists of three core pillars:

Workflow Redesign (5 points): Restructuring daily operations and processes through AI adoption.
Securing AI Agents (5 points): Integrating and deploying advanced AI assistants (such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) into day-to-day tasks.
Enhancing Organizational Efficiency (10 points): Measurable boosts in productivity and operational speed driven by AI implementation.

3. Organizational Restructuring and the Rise of CAIOs

Following the group-wide declaration in June to embed AI across all business operations, Samsung affiliates have rapidly reorganized their structures. Financial arms like Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance reorganized their existing units into dedicated "AX/PI (Process Innovation) Centers," while Samsung Card newly established an AX/PI center. Furthermore, hardware and component affiliates have created the position of Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) to oversee enterprise-wide transformation. For instance, Samsung Display appointed Vice President Noh Chul-rae (head of the AX Research Institute) as CAIO, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics appointed Vice President Jang Woo-seok (head of the Central Research Institute) to lead its AI initiatives.

4. Broader Industry Trends: AX Initiatives Across LG, SK, and GS Groups

The urgency to implement AX is sweeping across South Korea's major conglomerates, extending far beyond Samsung:

LG Group: LG is focusing heavily on empowering its workforce through intensive AI education. LG Electronics recently hosted an "AX Hackathon" involving approximately 2,100 employees, generating over 700 practical AI application ideas slated for real-world business integration.
SK Group: During its annual Icheon Forum, SK dedicated all three days entirely to AI for the first time. Chairman Chey Tae-won emphasized a full-speed, 360-degree approach to AX, ordering the establishment of an "1 AI Agent per Employee" ecosystem across the group.
GS Group: GS has launched its proprietary AX platform named "MISO" and partnered with global AI infrastructure firms like Vercel. This enables non-technical, non-coding frontline employees to build and deploy their own customized AI business tools easily.

5. Conclusion and Future Outlook

The rapid institutionalization of AI governance through performance-linked metrics signals that South Korean enterprises are moving past the experimental phase of generative AI. By tying executive promotions and compensation directly to verifiable productivity gains and AI agent deployment, conglomerates like Samsung, LG, SK, and GS are institutionalizing a structural shift. This ensures that artificial intelligence transitions from a supplementary tech tool into the core operating system of modern corporate management.
