Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Joins Liverpool FC as Minority Investor in Landmark Deal

LIVERPOOL, UK – Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool Football Club, announced on August 14, 2026, that they have reached a definitive agreement to sell a minority stake in the club to "1892 Holdings," a newly formed consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. The deal, which values the Premier League giants at over £5.5 billion ($7 billion), marks a significant milestone in the club’s history and signals a new era of global commercial expansion.

A Consortium of Global Titans

The 1892 Holdings consortium—named after Liverpool’s founding year—features some of the world’s most prominent business leaders. Notably, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has entered the world of professional sports for the first time, investing through the K5 Sports fund, for which he serves as the lead investor.

Joining him in the consortium are Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife, Elaine, through their family office, EE Capital, as well as the Mittal family trusts. The total investment is estimated to be approximately £1.65 billion for a 30% stake in the club.

Operational Continuity and Board Representation

Despite the high-profile nature of the new investors, FSG will retain majority ownership and total operational control of the club. FSG president Mike Gordon emphasized that the club remains committed to the "long-term philosophy" that has guided Liverpool since the group’s initial acquisition in 2010 for £300 million.

Governance changes are minimal but strategic. Amit Bhatia will join Liverpool’s expanded board of directors as vice-chairman, bringing nearly two decades of football management experience from his tenure at Queens Park Rangers. Additionally, Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum, managing partner of K5 Global, are expected to take up seats on the board. Jeff Bezos, however, will remain a passive investor and is not expected to participate in board activities.

Strategic Vision and Market Impact

The deal is not intended to provide immediate cash for transfers, nor will it change the day-to-day operations of the team under head coach Andoni Iraola. Instead, FSG views this partnership as a vehicle for long-term commercial growth. By leveraging the vast international networks of the consortium members—particularly in India and broader Asia—Liverpool aims to significantly increase its annual revenue and global brand presence.

"Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season," Gordon stated, highlighting that the club’s stability continues to attract elite business leaders.

The transaction remains subject to standard regulatory approval, a process expected to conclude within 90 days. As Liverpool prepares for the challenges of the new season, this infusion of capital and expertise from some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs underscores the club's enduring status as a premier global institution in football.
