Argentina Eyes $30 Billion in Fuel Exports by 2031, YPF President Unveils Ambitious Plans

Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentina has set its sights on becoming a major fuel exporter, with YPF President Lacio Marín outlining an ambitious plan that could generate $30 billion in annual exports by 2031. This vision hinges on the full participation of the energy industry in the development of the vast Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas reserves.

In a recent address, Marín expressed optimism about Argentina's energy future, emphasizing that the $30 billion export target is achievable through collaborative efforts across the entire industry. He also stated that YPF is expecting to surpass the historical oil production record of 850,000 barrels per day, achieved in 1998. The Neuquén Basin, particularly the "Southern Vaca Muerta" region, is expected to be a key driver of this growth, necessitating the construction of vital pipeline infrastructure.

YPF, in collaboration with other major energy companies, is investing $2.9 billion in the "Southern Vaca Muerta" project, with a significant portion of the funding coming from international banks. This project, which has applied for benefits under the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), is projected to generate over $20 billion in annual oil exports within the next few years.

Marín also provided details on the "Argentina LNG" project, which aims to export 30 million tons of gas. The project will be developed in three phases:

Argentina LNG 1: Involves bringing two floating LNG vessels, with operations starting in September 2027, targeting 6 million tons of LNG.
Argentina LNG 2: Aims for 10 million tons, in collaboration with Shell and with participation from all Argentine energy companies.
A third phase: Is under analisys, and has the possibility of being very big.
Furthermore, YPF plans to enhance its refining operations by implementing an AI-driven operations center at the La Plata refinery. This initiative will complement the existing use of AI in upstream exploration and production, aiming to maximize efficiency and reduce operational timelines. "On April 7, we will open a real-time intelligence center so that the La Plata refinery, through efficiency, can achieve the maximum possible margin," Marín stated. He also highlighted recent drilling efficiencies in Vaca Muerta, where well drilling times have been significantly reduced.

With these ambitious plans, Argentina is positioning itself to become a major player in the global energy market, leveraging its vast natural resources and technological advancements. 1
