DAEJEON, South Korea – In a heartfelt tribute to the nation's heroes during "Hoguk Bounui Dal" (Patriots and Veterans Month), Daejeon City, in partnership with the Armed Forces Nursing Academy and the Daejeon branch of the Korean War Veterans Association, conducted a significant environmental cleanup at Daejeon Veterans Park on June 11. This initiative aimed to honor the sacrifices of national meritorious persons and instill the spirit of patriotism in future generations.
The event, meticulously organized to perpetuate the memory of those who dedicated their lives to the nation, saw approximately 50 participants, including 40 cadets from the Armed Forces Nursing Academy and members of the Korean War Veterans Association. Their collective efforts focused on revitalizing the park's facilities. Volunteers meticulously cleaned 16 priority parking spaces designated for national meritorious persons, diligently washed memorial plaques dedicated to Korean War veterans, and tidied the surrounding areas of the park. The collaborative spirit underscored a powerful message of intergenerational respect and shared national pride.
Following the hands-on cleanup, participants gathered for a brief but impactful educational session on patriotism and shared their personal reflections on the day's activities. This interactive segment fostered meaningful dialogue between the younger cadets and the seasoned veterans, bridging a generational gap and deepening their understanding of national service. The exchange of experiences served as a poignant reminder of the enduring significance of patriotism and the sacrifices made for the nation's freedom.
Lee Ji-min, a cadet from the Armed Forces Nursing Academy, expressed her profound sentiments, stating, "Directly participating in the cleanup at the Veterans Park allowed me to truly grasp the noble sacrifices of our fallen heroes. Spending time with the national meritorious persons was an invaluable experience that deeply ingrained the meaning of loving our country." Her words resonated with the palpable sense of purpose shared by all who participated.
Yang Cheol-soon, head of the Korean War Veterans Association's Daejeon branch, conveyed his immense joy and pride at seeing younger generations actively involved in commemorating those who sacrificed for the nation. "It warms my heart to see the youth participate in honoring our ancestors who sacrificed for the country," he remarked, expressing a fervent hope for more such collaborative initiatives in the future.
Kim Jong-min, Director of Daejeon City's Welfare Bureau, reaffirmed the city's unwavering commitment to maintaining and preserving national memorial facilities. "We will continue to show sustained interest in and maintain memorial facilities so that the sacrifices and dedication of national meritorious persons are not forgotten," he stated. He further emphasized the city's intention to expand patriotic activities that encourage participation from diverse age groups, fostering a stronger sense of national identity and appreciation across all generations. This commitment reflects a broader national effort to ensure that the valor and dedication of veterans remain a cornerstone of Korean society. The collaboration between civilian authorities, military academies, and veteran organizations serves as a model for promoting civic duty and historical awareness.
