Cheonan, South Korea – Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong Province) has officially launched the "Chungnam TP Display Innovation Process Center," the nation's first comprehensive pilot line for the entire display production cycle, solidifying its position as a global powerhouse in the display industry. The grand opening ceremony, held on April 23rd, was attended by Governor Kim Tae-heum, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) Industry Policy Office Director General Lee Seung-ryeol, and over 300 other dignitaries.

Operated by the Chungnam Technopark (Chungnam TP), the Display Innovation Process Center is a groundbreaking infrastructure project designed to spearhead the development of next-generation display technologies. This ₩159.8 billion (approximately $117 million USD) facility, spanning four above-ground and one underground floor with a total area of 13,320 square meters, is located within the Chungnam TP complex in Cheonan.

The center is equipped with 65 advanced pieces of equipment across 63 categories, covering Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) processes, innovative manufacturing techniques, and comprehensive testing and evaluation capabilities. Its primary mission is to serve as a crucial testbed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), facilitating process innovation and accelerating the commercialization of their technologies and products.

The Display Innovation Process Center will provide comprehensive support to companies, encompassing technology verification, prototype production, evaluation and certification, and workforce training. Furthermore, it will act as a vital link between anchor companies like Samsung and LG, and smaller enterprises by providing validation results of SME-developed products, fostering collaboration across the display industry value chain.

Key initiatives planned for the center include:

OLED verification and evaluation services
Test analysis and module development support
Verification and evaluation of materials, structures, devices, patterns, and equipment
Validation of next-generation equipment
Global component, material, and equipment (SoBuJang) process verification services for overseas companies
Support for Chungnam's display SoBuJang development
Attraction of joint industry-academia-research R&D infrastructure support projects
Securing next-generation core platform projects
추진 of joint development projects for future displays
Provision of on-the-job training programs for company employees
Support for display-related education and event facilities
The province anticipates that the full operationalization of the Display Innovation Process Center will yield significant outcomes, including:

Innovation in processing methods and development of innovative materials and processing technologies for ultra-low cost realization.
Development of next-generation display technologies to secure a technological lead.
Development of convergence display technologies to create new markets.
Establishment of infrastructure to foster a cooperative support system and R&D environment for SMEs.
Creation of a virtuous cycle ecosystem among material, equipment, panel, and set companies.
Governor Kim Tae-heum emphasized Chungnam's proactive efforts, stating, "Following the successful bid for a specialized complex and the passage of the preliminary feasibility study for the ₩484 billion inorganic light-emitting display project, we will now focus on supporting the development of OLED-related components, materials, and equipment (SoBuJang) for SMEs, as well as R&D and talent development through this Display Innovation Process Center."

He further added, "As the only integrated pilot facility in Korea, the Display Innovation Process Center will serve as a hub for close collaboration among industry, academia, research institutions, and government, enabling technological self-reliance and rapid commercialization. We will also strive to create synergy by linking it with the inorganic light-emitting (iLED) display smart modular center, which we are preparing as a future growth engine."

Governor Kim also highlighted the importance of technological competitiveness in the face of an unstable global trade environment, stating, "Amidst changes in the unstable trade environment, such as the US-China trade war, it is more important than ever to possess technological competitiveness that cannot be shaken by anyone. Chungnam will continue to create a super-gap in display technology."

The South Korean display industry plays a significant role in the national economy, accounting for 3.12% of the nation's GDP (approximately ₩2,401.1 trillion in 2023) and 2.95% of total exports (approximately $630 billion USD in 2023). In 2023, the global display market reached $118.1 billion USD, with South Korea holding the second-largest share at $39.44 billion USD (33.4%). Chungnam province contributes significantly to this, with a display production value of $22.6 billion USD, representing 19.4% of the global market and 58.1% of South Korea's total display production. Asan, within Chungnam, is home to Samsung Display, the world's leading display panel manufacturer, and hosts an additional 204 related SMEs.

The establishment of the Chungnam TP Display Innovation Process Center marks a pivotal step in strengthening South Korea's and Chungnam's leadership in the global display industry, fostering innovation, and supporting the growth of SMEs in this strategically important sector.
