'Chung Ju-yung Style' Drive Pierces Indian Market: HD Hyundai Construction Equipment Rises to No. 2

(C) Aggregates Business

PUNE, INDIA — In the heart of Pune, Maharashtra, the production lines of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE) India are buzzing with activity. Rows of freshly manufactured excavators stand ready for shipment—a testament to a success story that locals describe as "legendary."

Since breaking ground in 2007, HCE India has embodied the relentless "entrepreneurial spirit" of the late Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung. Remarkably, the company delivered its first unit less than two years after starting plant construction, overcoming a lack of local tax data and regulatory information through sheer persistence and "footwork" marketing.

Rugged Solutions for a Harsh Environment
The secret to HCE’s dominance lies in localization. Recognizing that Indian operators use machinery under extreme heat and heavy dust, the company engineered excavators with enhanced durability.

Today, the Pune facility has grown into a massive 202,000-square-meter hub capable of producing up to 9,200 units annually, including excavators, wheel loaders, and forklifts. Production efficiency has reached a peak, with an average of 27 units born daily through a process liken to "assembling giant Lego bricks."

Market Performance and Global Export Hub
HCE now holds the second-largest market share in India, trailing only Tata Hitachi. The numbers speak for themselves:

2022: 4,748 units sold
2024: Over 7,000 units sold
2025 (H1): 3,770 units (Exceeding targets)

Beyond domestic sales, which account for 80% of production, the India wing has evolved into a global export hub, shipping over 10% of its output to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Culture as a Competitive Advantage
Beyond technology, HCE’s "family-oriented" corporate culture has become its "special sauce." By offering Korean language classes and hosting family invitation events, the company has fostered a unique bond with its 1,200 local employees.

"There are many cases where employees who left for Japanese or Chinese competitors returned because they missed our organizational culture," an official noted. This loyalty translates into productivity; local team leaders now proactively lead problem-solving efforts on the shop floor.

A Golden Era of Infrastructure
The outlook for HCE India remains exceptionally bright. As India aims to move 50% of its population into cities by the 100th anniversary of its independence in 2047, the demand for housing and roads is expected to skyrocket.

"Building the modern India over the next 20 years is akin to building an entire United States within our borders," said a representative, quoting an industry colleague. To meet this demand, HCE is accelerating innovations in smart factory technology and increasing local component sourcing.

With the determination to "tame the Indian elephant," HD Hyundai Construction Equipment is paving the way for a future where Korean machinery moves the very earth of the world’s most populous nation.
