Asuncion, Paraguay – This Saturday, May 24th, a historic moment will unfold in Paraguayan sports history. Las Arpas de Paraguay GAA, Paraguay's first Gaelic football national team, will play its inaugural international match against Argentina's Cuenca del Plata GAA.

The match will take place at Luque Rugby Club from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM and is open free of charge to all spectators. This event marks Las Arpas' official debut as a formal team in an international competition, opening a new chapter in Paraguayan sports history.

Gaelic football, originating from Ireland, is a sport played with a round ball on a grass field, combining elements of soccer, basketball, and handball. Similar to soccer, players can score a 3-point goal or gain 1 point by sending the ball over the crossbar between two vertical posts. H-shaped goalposts are erected at both ends of the field.

This event, held with the support of the Embassy of Ireland in Paraguay, is designed to provide the Paraguayan public with a unique and exciting sports experience and to strengthen local cultural and sports exchange. Official tournament uniforms will be available for purchase during the event.

Evening Celebration: Official After Party

The historic day will conclude with a festive evening. Starting at 8:00 PM, the official Las Arpas after-party will begin at the Madam Eliza Lynch Ballroom, located in the Gran Hotel del Paraguay in Asuncion.

Admission is 250,000 Guaranies (PYG), but match attendees can enter for free by presenting their event wristband at the entrance. This party will be a night for players, fans, sponsors, and members of the international Gaelic football community to gather and enjoy music, camaraderie, and celebration.

Through this event, Paraguay will expand its sports diversity and reaffirm its openness to cultural exchange and international participation.

What is Gaelic Football? – Ireland's Heart, A Sport Spreading Globally

Gaelic football is the most popular traditional ball sport in Ireland and is one of the Gaelic Games overseen by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Its rules were unified and systematized with the establishment of the GAA in 1884, and it is now widely played throughout Ireland as well as among Irish emigrant communities worldwide.

Game Format:

Field: Played on a rectangular grass pitch with H-shaped goalposts at each end. The bottom part of the goalposts resembles a soccer goal with a net, and two vertical posts extend above the crossbar.
Players: Each team consists of 15 players (1 goalkeeper, 6 defenders, 2 midfielders, 6 forwards), with substitutes also used.
Ball: A round ball similar to a soccer ball but slightly heavier is used.
Scoring:Goal: Scoring a goal by putting the ball into the net below the crossbar earns 3 points.
Point: Kicking the ball over the crossbar and between the two vertical posts earns 1 point.
Ball Handling:Passing: The ball can be passed by hitting it with the hand (handpass) or by kicking it with the foot.
Dribbling: Players can move the ball by bouncing it once on the ground (solo) or by kicking it to themselves and catching it (hop). Players cannot run with the ball for more than 4 steps.
Tackling: Opponents can be tackled by striking the ball out of their hands or by shoulder-charging them. Directly taking the ball from an opponent's hand is not allowed.
Fouls: Throwing the ball, excessive physical contact, and disobeying the referee's instructions are considered fouls.
Gaelic football is a dynamic sport that involves intense physical contact, fast-paced play, and requires a variety of skills. It combines the dribbling and shooting of soccer, the passing of basketball, and the goal-scoring methods of handball, making it engaging even for those new to the sport.

The Beginning and Significance of Gaelic Football in Paraguay

Gaelic football was a relatively unfamiliar sport in Paraguay, but it has gradually spread in recent years along with growing interest in Irish culture. 'Las Arpas de Paraguay GAA' is a team born from this trend, formed by Irish residents in Paraguay and Paraguayans interested in Gaelic football.

This international debut match holds significance beyond just a single game. It is an important step in expanding the diversity of sports in Paraguay and vitalizing international sports exchange. Furthermore, it is expected to strengthen cultural ties between Ireland and Paraguay. In particular, the support from the Embassy of Ireland is anticipated to be a significant boost for the establishment of Gaelic football in Paraguay.

The Paraguayan government and sports organizations hope that this match will provide their citizens with a new sports experience and enable younger generations to engage with Gaelic football, broadening their participation in sports. In the long term, it is expected to contribute to expanding the reach of Gaelic football in the South American region and enhancing Paraguay's standing within the international Gaelic football community.

While achieving a good result in this match is important for Las Arpas, it holds even greater significance in introducing Gaelic football to the Paraguayan people and fostering a deeper understanding of Irish culture. All eyes are on this match, which will undoubtedly mark a new chapter in Paraguayan sports history.
