Asunción, Paraguay – The Paraguayan government has extended its deepest condolences and expressed solidarity with the people of Argentina following the tragic loss of life caused by severe storms and floods that struck Bahía Blanca this past Friday.
The Paraguayan Foreign Ministry released an official statement via social media, stating, “The Government of Paraguay expresses its solidarity with the government and people of Argentina in the face of the tragic loss of life caused by the recent floods in the city of Bahía Blanca. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this unfortunate climatic event.”
Bahía Blanca, a city with over 336,000 residents located in the southwest of the province of Buenos Aires, was devastated by an unprecedented deluge. Meteorological reports indicate that approximately 400mm of rainfall, equivalent to a year’s worth, fell on the city during the catastrophic event.
Despite recovering from pneumonia in a hospital, Pope Francis conveyed his closeness to the victims of the Argentine floods, according to the Vatican. “The Pope has been informed of the floods in Argentina and is clearly close to the suffering of the people of Bahía Blanca. He accompanies them with his thoughts and prayers,” the Vatican press office stated.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also issued an official statement expressing “deep condolences.” Federico Susbielles, the mayor of Bahía Blanca, estimated the flood damage to be around $400 million.
The severe weather conditions led to significant disruptions and damage, prompting widespread concern and calls for immediate assistance. The outpouring of support from neighboring countries and international leaders highlights the global community’s response to such natural disasters.
