Gimpo City's Pungmu Library is set to celebrate the Month of Family in May with a unique and interactive program titled "Dreaming of the World Through Reading with Parents and Children" (부모랑 아이랑 낭독으로 꿈꾸는 세상). This special initiative will offer families the opportunity to experience "sound play," a form of storytelling where participants collaboratively read and perform a children's book using their voices and simple sound effects.

The "Dreaming of the World Through Reading with Parents and Children" program is designed to foster a love of reading, enhance family bonding, and encourage creative expression. It will run for a total of four sessions, taking place every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, commencing on May 10th.

This enriching program is being organized as part of the experiential activities for the "2025 Korea Reading Grand Festival" (2025년 대한민국 독서대전). Gimpo City has the distinct honor of hosting this prestigious national reading festival in 2025, underscoring the city's commitment to promoting literacy and a vibrant reading culture.

The Pungmu Library's sound play program will be led by two experienced professionals from the sound play troupe "The People Who Read Books" (책을 읽어주는 사람들). Jung Jae-gap, the representative of the troupe, will conduct the first session, focusing on the theoretical aspects of sound play and reading aloud. The subsequent three sessions will be led by voice actress Nam Kyung-hee, who will guide participants through practical acting techniques and help them bring the stories to life through vocal performance.

Sound Play: An Engaging Approach to Literacy

Sound play, also known as dramatic reading or readers' theater, is an engaging and interactive approach to storytelling that goes beyond simply reading words on a page. It involves participants using their voices to portray characters, create sound effects, and interpret the narrative in a dynamic and expressive way. This method can enhance comprehension, boost confidence in public speaking, and make the reading experience more enjoyable and memorable for both children and adults.

Experts in literacy education highlight the numerous benefits of reading aloud and engaging in activities like sound play. These benefits include:

Improved Literacy Skills: Reading aloud helps children develop phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
Enhanced Communication Skills: Sound play encourages clear articulation, expressive vocal delivery, and effective communication of emotions and ideas.
Increased Confidence: Performing in a supportive and fun environment can boost children's self-esteem and confidence in expressing themselves.
Stronger Family Bonds: Participating in shared activities like sound play creates positive experiences and strengthens the bonds between parents and children.
Cultivating a Love of Reading: Making reading an active and enjoyable experience can foster a lifelong love of books and learning.
Developing Creativity and Imagination: Sound play encourages participants to use their imagination to create characters, settings, and atmospheres through their voices.
Gimpo's Commitment to Reading Culture

Gimpo City's hosting of the 2025 Korea Reading Grand Festival is a testament to its dedication to fostering a strong reading culture within the community and across the nation. The annual festival serves as a platform to promote the importance of reading, celebrate literary achievements, and encourage reading-related activities for people of all ages.

Throughout 2025, Gimpo City will be hosting a diverse range of reading culture events leading up to the main festival in September. These events are expected to include author talks, book exhibitions, reading workshops, literary performances, and various interactive programs designed to engage the community in the joy of reading. The "Dreaming of the World Through Reading with Parents and Children" program at Pungmu Library is an integral part of this year-long celebration.

Registration Details

Families interested in participating in the "Dreaming of the World Through Reading with Parents and Children" program can register online through the Gimpo City Pungmu Library website (www.gimpo.go.kr/pungmu/index.do). Registration will open on Wednesday, April 16th, at 10:00 AM on a first-come, first-served basis. Given the engaging nature of the program and the limited number of spots likely available, interested families are encouraged to register promptly.

The Pungmu Library's initiative to offer this sound play program underscores its commitment to providing enriching and educational experiences for the community, particularly families. By combining the joy of storytelling with the interactive element of performance, the program promises to be a memorable and beneficial experience for parents and children alike. As Gimpo City gears up to host the 2025 Korea Reading Grand Festival, programs like this at the local library level play a crucial role in building a strong foundation for a nationwide celebration of reading and literacy. Families in the Gimpo area are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to connect through the magic of stories and the power of their own voices.
