24 South Korean Nationals Arrested in Nepal After Participating in Religious Program on Tourist Visas

KATHMANDU — Twenty-four South Korean nationals who entered Nepal on tourist visas have been arrested by local police for participating in a religious program, local media reported on October 12 (local time).

According to the Nepali online media outlet Ratopati, the arrests took place after the individuals were found attending a religious training program at the New Covenant College, a Christian educational institution located in the Morang district of Koshi Province, eastern Nepal.

Authorities stated that the group arrived in Nepal between October 6 and 7, traveling via the capital city of Kathmandu and Biratnagar in Koshi Province, and were scheduled to stay in the country through the day of their arrest. The institution they visited is reportedly operated with the support of a South Korea-based Christian missionary organization, focusing on religious research and education.

Nepali police detained the group on suspicion that some of their activities violated the conditions of their tourist visas. Under Nepalese law, foreign nationals entering the country on tourist visas are strictly prohibited from participating in religious education or proselytizing activities.

In response to the incident, South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "We are aware of the situation and, immediately upon learning of it, have been closely communicating with relevant authorities in Nepal through the Embassy of South Korea in Nepal to provide necessary consular assistance to our citizens."

The ministry added, "Detailed information regarding this matter is difficult to disclose due to privacy considerations and the fact that an investigation by the Nepali authorities is currently underway."
