Seoul, South Korea – The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), celebrating its 11th anniversary, has unveiled its ambitious "New Perspective" plan. This initiative aims to redefine the DDP and the surrounding Dongdaemun area into a premier cultural complex by 2027.

Reimagining the DDP

The core of the plan involves a comprehensive reconfiguration of the DDP's interior and exterior spaces. The goal is to create a multifaceted cultural facility that seamlessly integrates education, community engagement, and archiving.

Key changes include:

Design Lab and Museum: These spaces will be transformed into a "Design Larchiveum," a unique blend of library, archives, and museum.
Enhanced Exhibitions: The DDP plans to expand its permanent and special exhibitions, highlighting the excellence of Korean design.
Global Design Hub: By attracting major domestic companies, the DDP aims to solidify its position as a leading global design center.
Revitalizing Dongdaemun History & Culture Park
The transformation extends beyond the DDP itself to include the adjacent Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. The park will be revamped into a vibrant destination, particularly for the younger generation.

Key improvements include:

New Water Features: The park will feature new fountains and other water installations, providing a refreshing escape for visitors, especially during the summer months.
Greening Project: The park's landscape will be enhanced with additional greenery, creating a more pleasant and inviting environment.
Pedestrian-Friendly Zones: The 12,419㎡ surrounding the DDP will be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly area with cafes and other amenities.
Fostering a Design Startup Ecosystem
The DDP will also play a crucial role in nurturing a thriving design startup ecosystem. In collaboration with the Dongdaemun commercial district, the DDP will:

Establish a Startup Center: This center will provide resources and support for emerging designers.
Offer Incubation Programs: The DDP will utilize vacant spaces to offer startup support programs and mentorship opportunities.

A Decade of Success

Since its opening in 2014, the DDP has become a landmark destination in Seoul. In 2023 alone, the DDP welcomed over 10 million visitors, and it continues to attract both local and international attention. With its new vision, the DDP is poised to further solidify its position as a global hub for design, culture, and innovation.
