Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province — The long-held dream of Bucheon City to transform Bucheon High School into a science high school (Science High School) has cleared a significant hurdle.

On the 27th, Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Ki-pyo (Bucheon-eul) announced that the plan for the establishment of Bucheon Science High School successfully passed the Ministry of Education's Central Investment Review (중앙투자심사).

Project Details

The project involves converting the existing Bucheon High School into an advanced, convergence-type science high school with a capacity of 15 classes and 300 students.

Total Project Cost: 47.9 billion KRW.
Funding: Bucheon City will bear the full cost of school facilities and dormitory construction.
Temporary Dormitory: Until the new dormitory is built, students will temporarily use the facilities at the Sosa Campus of Bucheon University.

Educational Focus and Timeline

Construction is scheduled to begin next year, with the school potentially opening in March 2027. Bucheon Science High School plans to offer an integrated curriculum focusing on convergence science based on regional specialized industries—Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI)—in partnership with institutions like the Bucheon Industry Promotion Agency. It will also utilize local cultural infrastructure to provide a creative convergence education blending science and art.

Political Endorsement

"I will do my best to ensure that Bucheon Science High School establishes itself as an educational institution that expands educational opportunities for students and brightens the future of our region," said Rep. Kim, who originally proposed the establishment of the school to Gyeonggi Province Superintendent of Education Lim Tae-hee last September.
