The President of the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), Lamin Kaba Bajo, is leading the Gambian delegation to the 75th FIFA Congress in Asunción, Paraguay.

Accompanying President Bajo, as with delegations from FIFA’s 211 member associations, are GFF Executive Committee Member Maimouna Kanteh and General Secretary Lamin M. Jassey for this significant assembly.

This year’s Congress is particularly notable as it is being held in Asunción, the home of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) headquarters. The timing coincides with the centenary of Paraguayan football becoming a member of FIFA, a milestone achieved on May 24, 1925, during the 14th FIFA Ordinary Congress held in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Paraguayan football, as an early member of FIFA, has made significant contributions to the development of football in South America.

The FIFA Congress will feature in-depth discussions on key international football development issues related to governance and policy. Notably, the election of new members to FIFA’s various committees, including the Disciplinary Committee, the Ethics Committee, and the Appeal Committee, as well as the Audit Committee and the Governance and Compliance Committee, will be a crucial agenda item.

These FIFA committees play a vital role in FIFA’s operations, holding the responsibility for maintaining transparency, ethical oversight, and sound governance across the international football ecosystem. The Disciplinary Committee reviews cases of FIFA regulation violations and decides on sanctions, while the Ethics Committee establishes ethical standards for the football community and investigates breaches. The Appeal Committee handles appeals against disciplinary decisions, and the Audit Committee oversees the transparency of FIFA’s financial operations. The Governance and Compliance Committee is responsible for ensuring the integrity of FIFA’s organizational and operational structures and monitoring compliance with regulations.

President Bajo’s attendance at this FIFA Congress underscores the Gambia’s commitment to strengthening its international standing in football and actively participating in the key decision-making processes of the global football community. Furthermore, it presents a significant opportunity to engage in discussions related to the development of football in developing nations and to convey the Gambia’s perspectives on FIFA’s policy formulation.

This Congress is anticipated to be a pivotal event, reflecting on FIFA’s 100-year history and outlining a vision for the next century. In particular, the commemoration of Paraguayan football’s 100th anniversary as a FIFA member is expected to highlight the history and development of South American football and foster greater unity and solidarity within the international football community.

Through this Congress, FIFA is expected to deliberate and decide on various policies aimed at the sustainable development of international football and the creation of a fair competitive environment. These are likely to include a wide range of agendas such as youth football development, the advancement of women’s football, football technology innovation, and the strengthening of social responsibility initiatives. Additionally, discussions on recent contentious issues within international football, such as amendments to the laws of the game, improvements to the transfer system, and the reinforcement of financial fair play regulations, are also highly probable.

The Gambian delegation’s participation in this Congress also signifies its commitment as a member association of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and its dedication to actively engaging in discussions related to the advancement of African football. African football has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, and its prominence within FIFA is steadily increasing. President Bajo is expected to articulate the current challenges and development strategies of African football and to strengthen cooperation with other member associations during this Congress.

The 75th FIFA Congress will serve as an important platform for key figures in the international football community to convene, discuss future development directions, and explore avenues for collaboration. The delegations from Gambia and other member associations are expected to share ideas for the advancement of their respective national football programs and to fulfill their responsible roles as members of the global football community. In particular, they are anticipated to actively participate in FIFA’s efforts to create a transparent and ethical football environment and to contribute to the dissemination of a sound football culture.
