INCHEON – The city of Incheon is embarking on an initiative to identify and preserve its rich tangible and intangible local heritage assets, aiming to safeguard them for future generations. The Incheon Metropolitan City government announced on May 22 that it will launch a public proposal contest from May 26 to June 9, inviting citizens to suggest objects, figures, and other elements that embody Incheon's unique historical narrative.
The scope of potential heritage assets is broad, encompassing various facets of Incheon's identity across history, industry, urban development, daily life, and arts and culture. Examples provided include the city's connection to Hawaiian immigration, the origin of Jjolmyeon (a spicy Korean noodle dish believed to have originated in Incheon), the significance of the Incheon Municipal Museum, and the historical relevance of Incheon Station. These examples highlight the diverse range of unique assets that could qualify as local heritage. It is important to note that cultural heritage already designated by either the national or municipal government will not be eligible for this selection process.
Following the submission period, a preliminary list of Incheon local heritage candidates will be compiled from both citizen proposals and recommendations from various districts and boroughs. This list will be reviewed by the Regional Heritage Committee, slated to convene in late June. Outstanding citizen proposals selected through this deliberation process will be awarded mobile coupons as a token of appreciation.
Subsequently, the nominated heritage assets will undergo a thorough investigation by specialized institutions, including basic status surveys and research 용역 (service/project). With the consent of the respective owners, the final selection of Incheon local heritage assets is anticipated to be made in November, following a comprehensive review by the Incheon City Regional Heritage Committee.
Once officially designated, these chosen local heritage assets will receive certifications and markers to promote public awareness. The city plans to integrate these recognized assets into public relations campaigns and link them with tourism and experiential programs, thereby disseminating and amplifying their inherent value.
Participation in the contest is open to anyone with an interest in Incheon's local heritage. Application forms can be submitted via email to iheritage@korea.kr or through the official Incheon City website.
Yoon Do-young, Director-General of the Culture and Sports Bureau, expressed his anticipation for the initiative, stating, "Through this public call, we hope that citizens will personally unearth diverse local heritage assets that encapsulate Incheon's unique identity and cultural value, and that we can successfully transmit these to future generations."
