To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Gwangbokjeol (National Liberation Day of Korea), the Independence Hall of Korea has prepared a variety of events for all citizens to participate in and enjoy. With programs ranging from an academic symposium and special exhibitions to a commemorative ceremony, it is expected to be a meaningful time to reflect on and celebrate the significance of liberation.
Academic and Archival Events to Re-examine the Meaning of Liberation
An academic symposium will be held to commemorate both the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 38th anniversary of the Independence Hall's opening. The symposium, titled '20th Century Asia: The Path to Decolonization,' will take place on August 6 at the Seoul Global Center. It will shed light on the colonial era and the decolonization process in depth, academically re-examining the historical significance of independence. The 21st Independence Hall Academic Awards ceremony will also be held on the same day to honor scholars who have contributed to research on the history of the independence movement.
Additionally, on August 14, an archival material release event titled 'Undeterred by Darkness, Koreans Blazed the Flower of Liberation' will be held in the Bright Nuri Hall classroom. The rare materials unveiled at this event are expected to vividly convey the fierce lives of independence activists and their fervent longing for liberation.
Encountering the History of Liberation Through Cutting-Edge Technology
New exhibitions are also noteworthy. The special exhibition, 'Taegeukgi, a Promise in the Wind,' which opens on Liberation Day, will provide an opportunity to look back on the history and meaning of the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag), a symbol of the independence movement. Furthermore, through a media exhibition titled 'The Joy of Liberation Revived by AI Supernova,' visitors can experience moments of liberation recreated with artificial intelligence technology. This will be a great opportunity to re-interpret past history with a modern sensibility, making it easily accessible to younger generations.
Gwangbokjeol Commemorative Ceremony and Cultural Performances for Everyone
The highlight of Gwangbokjeol, the '80th Gwangbokjeol Commemorative Ceremony,' will be held on August 15 at 10 a.m. in front of the 'Unbreakable Koreans' statue at the House of the Nation. The ceremony will feature a congratulatory flight by the Air Force's special aerobatic team, the 'Black Eagles,' and a piano performance by world-renowned pianist Paik Kun-woo, adding to the festive atmosphere. In addition, various cultural performances will follow, ensuring that all citizens can share in the joy of liberation.
Special educational programs for family visitors will also be operated during the summer vacation. Programs like 'Which independence activist am I like?' and 'Stories of independence movements in textbooks' will provide children with an opportunity to learn about the history of the independence movement in an easy and fun way.
Kim Hyeong-seok, the director of the Independence Hall, stated, "We hope this 80th Gwangbokjeol will become a festival where all citizens can participate and enjoy," and called for the active interest and participation of the entire nation. The Independence Hall plans to focus on reflecting on the meaning of liberation and conveying the importance of history to future generations through these events.
