South Korea's Youmin Hwang Captures LOTTE Championship Title, Secures LPGA Tour Card, But Debut Date Undecided

Ewa Beach, Hawaii—South Korea's Youmin Hwang claimed her first LPGA Tour victory at the LOTTE Championship on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Hoakalei Country Club. The win, achieved after a dramatic charge on the final day, instantly grants the young golfer an LPGA Tour card through the 2027 season, a monumental step that bypasses the typically grueling Q-Series. Despite securing her dream stage, the timing of her official LPGA debut remains an open question.

Hwang, known for her aggressive play and nicknamed the 'Assault Captain' on the KLPGA Tour, secured the one-stroke victory over compatriot Hyo Joo Kim with a final-round 5-under 67, finishing at 17-under 271 total. Her path to victory was marked by a breathtaking run, carding four birdies on the final four holes to pull away from the competition. This performance solidified her reputation as a formidable talent on the world stage.

LPGA Entry: A Dream Realized, A Decision Pending

The victory provides Hwang, who entered the tournament on a sponsor invitation, with immediate and full LPGA membership status. However, in the post-victory press conference, the 22-year-old indicated that she has yet to finalize her transition schedule.

"I don't have any specific plans for a transfer just yet," Hwang stated. "I need to discuss it with my staff. I'm happy to have achieved my long-cherished dream and am very excited and nervous about the prospect of playing in future LPGA tournaments."

Hwang has two options: she can accept immediate LPGA membership, completing the current season as a rookie, or she can defer her membership until the start of the 2026 season, which would then be designated as her rookie year. Her decision will have significant implications for her current KLPGA commitments and her preparation schedule.

Aggressive Play and a Humbling Hula

Hwang's aggressive style of play was evident until the very last shot. She identified the 18th hole as the moment she committed to an all-out attack.

"I decided to play aggressively only on the final hole," she explained, a calculated risk that paid off. "I was in a position where I could reach the green in two shots for a two-on, so I chose the aggressive line." The successful birdie there proved to be the winning margin.

Reflecting on the week, Hwang commented on the valuable experience of competing with LPGA players. "I learned a lot from playing with LPGA players over the four days, especially regarding their skills," she said. She also expressed immense pride in defeating the 2022 champion Kim Hyo Joo, an idol of hers, noting, "I've always admired Hyo Joo unnie (older sister). I'm even happier to become a champion like her."

The victory celebration included the traditional Hawaiian hula dance on the 18th green, a custom for the tournament winner. Hwang admitted the dance was harder than it looked on television. "Honestly, when I watched it on TV, it seemed pretty easy. But I was so nervous that I was just struggling to keep up," she confessed.

When asked what kind of player she wanted LPGA fans to remember, she provided a clear, heartfelt answer: "I want to be remembered by the fans as a player who truly enjoys golf." Hwang Yu-min’s triumphant win in Hawaii not only earns her a direct entry to the world's most competitive women's golf tour but also signals the arrival of a major new contender.
