Chuncheon Makguksu and Dakgalbi Festival Achieves Massive Success

Chuncheon, Gangwon Province's representative food festival, the 'Makguksu and Dakgalbi Festival,' achieved explosive success this year after relocating its venue to the Gongjicheon Riverside Promenade in the city center. The four-day festival, held from October 16 to 19, was continually packed with visitors, drawing massive crowds. Chuncheon City estimates that the number of visitors more than doubled compared to previous years.

The foremost factor contributing to the festival's success is cited as improved 'accessibility.' In previous years, the festival was criticized for being held in the outskirts of the city, such as Samcheondong Waterfront Park or Songam Sports Town, which limited accessibility. By moving to the heart of the city, citizens and tourists could easily reach the venue. Consequently, the festival established itself as a 'family-friendly festival,' attracting all generations, including the elderly and children.

The participation of major local establishments—five Makguksu restaurants and ten Dakgalbi restaurants—significantly elevated the festival's status. These vendors sold their food at prices lower than market rates (Makguksu for 7,000 KRW and Dakgalbi for 9,900 KRW), which proved immensely popular.

Furthermore, changes in the festival's content were well-received. The festival moved away from its previous focus on night markets and trot music performances, restructuring into a new model that links local commerce, brands, and tourism. The event space was divided into four food-themed zones: 'LOCAL EAT,' 'JUST DO EAT,' 'SHAKE EAT,' and 'PLAY EAT.' Notably, 'Green Adventure,' an eco-friendly experience zone for children utilizing no electricity, and the 'Farmer’s Market,' selling fresh seasonal produce from 24 local farms, were highly favored by families. The visit of Mukbang YouTuber Tzyang and performances by popular singers like Huh Gak also captured the interest of the younger demographic, further fueling the festival's excitement.

In response to the surge in visitors, Chuncheon City increased operational staff and added approximately 100 dining tables to enhance visitor convenience. Citizens who attended the festival expressed high satisfaction with the reasonable prices, diverse programs, and improved environment, indicating strong anticipation for next year's event. Based on this success, the Chuncheon Makguksu and Dakgalbi Festival is expected to firmly establish itself as Chuncheon's premier urban food festival.
