Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra Presents "Reflections of Life & Death"

Ulsan, South Korea – The Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra is set to present its 243rd Subscription Concert, "Reflections of Life & Death," on Friday, June 20, at 7:30 PM KST at the Grand Performance Hall of the Ulsan Culture and Arts Center. This highly anticipated performance promises a profound musical exploration of human existence, led by Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra's Artistic Director, Sasha Goetzel. The concert will feature collaborations with world-renowned soprano Erika Baikoff, baritone Kim Jeong-rae, and the Ulsan City Choir.

A Journey Through Despair and Hope

The evening will commence with Richard Strauss's "Metamorphosen," a study for 23 solo strings. Composed during the final stages of World War II, this poignant work reflects Strauss's deep despair and lament over the destruction of his beloved German cities and culture, coupled with an earnest hope for their restoration. The title, meaning "metamorphoses" or "transformations" in German, aptly describes the piece's continuous musical evolution. From beginning to end, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic motifs are organically intertwined, with each of the 23 string instruments contributing an independent voice, weaving a rich tapestry of profound emotion. "Metamorphosen" is renowned for its complex contrapuntal texture and its eloquent expression of grief and resilience, making it a powerful opening to the evening's theme.

Brahms' Revolutionary "German Requiem"

Following an intermission, the second half of the concert will feature Johannes Brahms' monumental "A German Requiem" (Ein deutsches Requiem). This grand-scale performance will bring together soprano Erika Baikoff, baritone Kim Jeong-rae, the Ulsan City Choir, and an additional 18 guest choristers, promising an exceptionally rich and moving experience.

Unlike traditional Latin Requiems, which are masses for the dead, Brahms' "German Requiem" deviates from conventional form. It uses texts directly extracted from the German Bible and is often referred to as a "requiem for the living," emphasizing human compassion, solace, and hope over sorrow for the departed. Composed of seven movements, the work showcases a meticulous musical balance through its majestic choral passages, refined orchestration, and the interwoven solos of the baritone and soprano. It movingly portrays the journey from grief to healing and hope in the face of loss, offering a quintessential experience of German Romanticism.

World-Class Soloists Grace the Stage

The concert is elevated by the presence of its acclaimed soloists. Soprano Erika Baikoff, making her highly anticipated appearance in Ulsan, has garnered international recognition for her exceptional talent. She is the first-prize winner of the 2019 Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition and the 10th Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Voice Competition, among other prestigious accolades. For the 2024/2025 season, Baikoff is scheduled to perform at esteemed venues across Europe, including London's Wigmore Hall, the Oxford International Festival, and the Sag Harbor Festival, showcasing her vibrant performance schedule.

Baritone Kim Jeong-rae has similarly captivated the classical music world. In 2024, he secured first prize at the Belvedere International Competition in Austria and second prize at the Geneva International Competition, drawing significant attention. His prior achievements include winning first prize at the Concours International de Chant de Marmande in France in 2023, solidifying his global reputation and undeniable skill. Currently based at the Zurich Opera House in Switzerland, Kim Jeong-rae frequently performs across various European stages in Italy and Austria.

Adding to the richness of the performance, the Ulsan City Choir, along with a significant number of guest vocalists from Ulsan, will contribute to an even more refined and deeply moving large-scale rendition, delivering a fuller and more profound harmony.

A Historic Performance for Ulsan

An official from the Ulsan City Arts Company expressed the significance of this event, stating, "This performance, under the baton of Austrian Artistic Director Sasha Goetzel, will be a special occasion, marking the first time Brahms' 'German Requiem' is presented in the region with a full orchestra and choir, preserving the original emotional essence on a grand scale." They added, "We hope for the keen interest and participation of citizens in this concert, which promises to be an unforgettable experience and memory."

Admission prices for the concert are 20,000 KRW for Royal (R) seats, 15,000 KRW for Special (S) seats, and 10,000 KRW for General (A) seats. Discounts are available: 30% for Ulsan Culture and Arts Center members, 20% for groups, and 50% for students (elementary, middle, high school) and youth cardholders.
