Incheon, South Korea – Incheon Metropolitan City has officially embarked on its journey to develop unique "Incheon-style K-Content" through a robust collaboration between the public sector, private industry, and academia. This strategic move aims to leverage the city's rich cultural heritage and modern infrastructure to become a global hub for cultural content.
The city, under the leadership of Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok, marked this significant first step by hosting the "i Design Seminar: K-Content" on May 22nd at George Mason University's Korea Campus, located within the Incheon Global Campus. The event, held in partnership with Incheon City's Content Planning Division and organized by George Mason University Korea, served as a crucial platform to explore the potential and direction for Incheon-specific K-Content development and to establish a formidable collaborative framework among key stakeholders. This initiative is designed to bolster the competitiveness of the regional content industry and propel Incheon onto the global stage as a leading cultural content city.
Joshua Park, Campus Dean of George Mason University Korea, emphasized the seminar's profound significance. "This seminar represents a meaningful starting point where academia, industry, and local government can collectively promote Korean culture and design the future of K-Content," stated Dean Park. He further affirmed the university's commitment, "We will continue to expand our research and educational collaborations with specialized domestic institutions, various companies, and universities to contribute to the development of the K-Content industry and serve as a global bridgehead."
The seminar featured insightful presentations and discussions from prominent figures across diverse sectors. Speakers included Professor Lee Gyu-tag of George Mason University (also a judge for the Korean Popular Music Awards), Lee Song-jae, Group Leader of SM C&C's BX Group, Kim Tae-hyun, Head of the Tourism Industry Department at Incheon Tourism Organization, and Moon Bum-seok, Manager of Hanwha's Content Business Team. They shared valuable case studies and future prospects for Incheon-style K-Content.
Professor Lee Gyu-tag, in his research presentation, highlighted the opportune timing for such an initiative. "This is a period when the government's active investment and the need for region-specific K-Content development are increasing," he explained. He underscored the critical importance of fostering a supportive environment for creators, stating, "It is deeply related to how we can support creation and build a background for creation." Professor Lee further elaborated on the expansive nature of K-Content, adding, "Now that K-Content is expanding into an all-encompassing culture, it's time to focus on what kind of future we can envision and how we can make it into world-class content."
Lee Song-jae of SM C&C offered a practical industry perspective, asserting, "Incheon is a city with unique assets encompassing history, culture, nature, and its status as a global hub." He proposed that by discovering and analyzing these assets to build an Incheon-style content platform, the city could establish a vital foundation for connecting diverse narratives. He stressed the importance of enhancing connections with local culture through various experiential activities beyond mere performance viewing and advocated for public-private cooperation to leverage urban infrastructure and expand collaborative networks.
Kim Tae-hyun, Head of the Tourism Industry Department at the Incheon Tourism Organization, expressed a vision for the city. "We want to brand Incheon as a city of music," he declared, expressing his hope for the continued implementation of public-private-academic linked programs such as this seminar.
Moon Bum-seok of Hanwha's Content Business Team emphasized the fusion of creativity and technology. "Cultural content develops when creative technology is added to cultural elements," he noted. He pointed out Incheon's strategic position as the most frequently visited gateway city for foreign tourists, suggesting that "by utilizing infrastructure and technological capabilities through public-private cooperation, competitive content can be produced." He further stressed the power of synergy, stating, "When each entity's content is collected and collaborated upon, unique Incheon-only K-Content can be created."
With this seminal seminar as a springboard, Incheon City plans to continuously provide platforms for discussion to fortify the regional content industry ecosystem and accelerate the establishment of a distinct Incheon-style content brand. This ambitious endeavor is expected to significantly contribute to Incheon's economic growth and cultural prominence on the international stage.
