Police have assigned a defamation complaint filed against the production team of the film "The Assassins," which has sparked historical distortion controversies, to the Seoul Jongno Police Station and initiated an investigation.
During a regular press briefing on the 6th, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Chief Go Beom-seok stated, "The complaint was filed on September 29 and assigned to the Jongno Police Station. We will proceed with the investigation according to legal procedures."
The case stems from a complaint filed by former Seoul Metropolitan Council member Lee Jong-bae against the film's director, writer, and producers, accusing them of defamation by disseminating false information. The police are expected to conduct questioning of the complainant soon.
The film has also drawn backlash from the bereaved family of former President Park Chung-hee. On the 2nd, former President Park Geun-hye released a letter sent to her by former President Park Chung-hee immediately after the shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-su through People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Young-ha, and Park Ji-man, chairman of EG, also publicly raised issues regarding the allegations raised in the film.
When asked whether additional measures would be taken by bereaved family members such as Chairman Park or former Yuk Young Foundation Chairperson Park Geun-ryung, Chief Go replied, "We have not yet received any reports regarding that matter."
Chief Go also addressed safety measures concerning a rally held in front of the private residence of the film's lead actor, Yoo Hae-jin.
Previously, New Freedom Solidarity and Bellado held a rally on the 4th in front of a detached house in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, known to be actor Yoo's residence, demanding the suspension of the film's screening and apologies from the production team and actors. Police unofficially estimated about 50 attendees, and two police riot police units were deployed to the scene.
Chief Go stated, "The rally was reported and held in front of the actor's residence on the 4th, concluding without any particular issues as reported. Rallies will be strictly managed in accordance with the law, and any threats or intimidation against the actor will also be handled legally."
He added, "Currently, there are no special requests from the actor or their agency, and there appear to be no major issues at the site. However, if we determine that safety issues arise, we are prepared to strengthen patrol activities and take additional measures such as personal protection depending on the situation."
