Downtown Montevideo Rocked by Cuban-Dominican Gunfight Amid Suspected Drug Turf War

Montevideo, Uruguay – A brazen midday shootout in the heart of Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities investigate a violent confrontation between individuals of Cuban and Dominican Republic nationalities. The incident, which unfolded on Monday afternoon, is believed to be the result of a fierce struggle for dominance in the lucrative local drug trade.

At approximately 5:00 PM local time, the tranquility of the downtown area near the intersection of Yaguarón and La Paz streets was shattered by the sounds of gunfire. Preliminary reports indicate that at least four armed individuals were involved in the altercation, transforming a busy urban thoroughfare into a scene of chaos and fear.

According to reports from TeleDoce, a local news affiliate, the exchange of gunfire left one man critically injured. The 36-year-old victim, identified through sources as having a substantial criminal history with nine prior convictions, sustained a severe gunshot wound to his left leg, resulting in a fractured femur. He was promptly transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Notably, the injured individual had been released from incarceration a mere week prior to the incident and was allegedly operating a known "boca de drogas," a Spanish term for a drug distribution point, in the immediate vicinity.

Law enforcement officials are actively pursuing their investigation, with the primary working theory being a territorial dispute between rival drug trafficking factions. Investigators posit that the gunfight erupted between Cuban nationals and individuals from the Dominican Republic vying for control of a prominent "drug sales point" situated at the crucial intersection of Yaguarón and La Paz streets. Subrayado, an online news portal, corroborated the existence of this illicit operation, stating that the "nondescript building" at the aforementioned intersection is a constant hub of activity for drug purchasers. The report further revealed the presence of a competing drug distribution network operated by a "rival group" just a few blocks away on Piedra Alta street, suggesting a broader conflict for control of the local drug market.

Eyewitness accounts and initial police statements indicate that the other individuals involved in the violent episode fled the scene before authorities could apprehend them. The central location of the shooting has deeply unsettled local residents, who have expressed profound concern over the escalating violence in their community. A citizen's video recording of the aftermath, swiftly circulated on social media platforms, offered a stark glimpse into the tense and dangerous situation that unfolded.

The investigation is currently under the jurisdiction of Montevideo Police Operational Zone 1, with detectives diligently working to identify the remaining individuals involved and to gather further evidence to solidify their understanding of the underlying motives and organizational structures at play.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence, as recent months have seen a concerning trend of foreign nationals, particularly Cuban citizens, being implicated in various criminal activities within Uruguay. Just days prior, on Saturday, a Cuban national was apprehended in Argentina's Neuquén Province during a police operation that dismantled a significant drug trafficking ring, highlighting the transnational nature of some of these criminal enterprises.

The preceding year also witnessed several instances of Cuban nationals facing legal repercussions in Uruguay. In November 2024, a Cuban man received a substantial prison sentence of six years and eight months for a litany of offenses, including aggravated sexual assault, domestic violence, assault, and the illegal trade of ammunition. Upon completion of his sentence, he is slated for deportation to Cuba. A month earlier, two Cuban individuals were arrested for attempting to smuggle illicit goods into the country, with one facing additional charges for attempting to bribe a police officer. Furthermore, in the Maldonado region, three Cuban nationals were taken into custody for assaulting law enforcement officials and causing damage to police vehicles.

The increasing frequency of criminal involvement by foreign nationals has ignited a growing sense of unease among the Uruguayan populace. The recent gunfight in downtown Montevideo serves to exacerbate these anxieties, prompting calls for more robust law enforcement measures and a comprehensive strategy to address the underlying factors contributing to such violence and criminal activity within the nation. Authorities are expected to intensify their efforts to investigate this latest incident and to implement preventative measures to safeguard the community from future outbreaks of similar violence.
