ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay – A significant delegation of 62 Paraguayan business leaders, predominantly of Japanese descent (Nikkei), is set to actively promote Paraguay's economic potential and investment opportunities at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo during Paraguay's National Day.

Nagaoka Naoki, President of the Paraguayan Japanese Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the delegation's enthusiasm and commitment to promoting their nation. Among the 62 representatives, 20 are members of the Chamber of Commerce, while the remaining 42 are entrepreneurs from diverse Paraguayan enterprises.

The Osaka-Kansai Expo will run from April 13 to October 13, with Paraguay's National Day celebrations scheduled for May 19. In an interview with Paraguay TV, Mr. Nagaoka stated, "We will be participating in presentations and supporting Paraguay's presence at this important exposition."

This visit holds added significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Paraguayan Japanese Chamber of Commerce, established in May 1975.

Mr. Nagaoka further noted that the delegation's itinerary includes meetings in Tokyo, Kobe, and Kyoto, in addition to Osaka, the location of the Expo.

Promoting Paraguayan Cuisine in Japan

Beyond the official Expo events, Paraguay is also aiming to make its mark on Japan's culinary scene. Mika Nishijima, a Japanese-Paraguayan journalist and expert on Japanese culture in Paraguay, is spearheading this initiative. Ms. Nishijima has announced plans for key events to introduce Japan to Paraguay's rich gastronomic heritage.

"On May 29th, we will be holding a Paraguayan cooking masterclass at the only Paraguayan restaurant in Tokyo," explained Ms. Nishijima. "The main dishes featured will be Sopa Paraguaya (a savory corn and cheese cake) and Borí Borí (a corn dumpling soup with meat and vegetables)."

Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025: Designing Future Society

The Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, themed "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," aims to foster innovation and collaboration towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The international exposition will serve as a platform for various countries, international organizations, and corporations to showcase future technologies and cultures. The themes of the Expo are further broken down into "Saving Lives," "Empowering Lives," and "Connecting Lives," highlighting the focus on global well-being and progress.

Strong Paraguay-Japan Ties

Paraguay and Japan have maintained long-standing friendly relations, with the Japanese immigrant (Nikkei) community playing a vital role in Paraguay's development. The two nations enjoy active exchanges in various fields, including economy and culture. The Nikkei community in Paraguay is one of the largest and most integrated in South America, contributing significantly to agriculture, business, and cultural life.

Paraguay's Economic Landscape

Paraguay's economy is primarily driven by agriculture and livestock. However, the country is increasingly focusing on diversifying its economy, with growing potential in sectors such as energy (particularly hydroelectric power), tourism, and manufacturing. Paraguay is actively seeking foreign investment to further stimulate economic growth and development. Its strategic location in South America and membership in Mercosur also offer access to a significant regional market.

The participation of this Paraguayan business delegation in the Osaka-Kansai Expo is anticipated to be a crucial step in highlighting Paraguay's economic attractiveness to the international community and further strengthening economic ties with Japan. Additionally, the promotion of Paraguayan cuisine is expected to raise awareness and appreciation for Paraguayan culture within Japan, fostering deeper people-to-people connections between the two nations. The timing of the delegation's visit, coinciding with the Paraguayan Japanese Chamber of Commerce's 50th anniversary, underscores the enduring and evolving partnership between Paraguay and Japan.
