Tennessee Community's Earnest Prayers for American Pastor Kidnapped in South Africa

KNOXVILLE, TN - Following the gunpoint kidnapping of an American Southern Baptist pastor with ties to Maryville during a sermon, the search for his safe return continues in South Africa.

South African authorities are investigating the disappearance of Pastor Josh Sullivan. The Knoxville County Association of Baptists (KCAB) explained that while some countries welcome missionaries, others do not permit the propagation of different religions.

"All we can do right now is pray, and prayer certainly has power," said Pastor Alan Price, Missions Mobilizer for the KCAB.

The path of a missionary, while rewarding, can come with risks. Missionaries travel to various countries to share the message of the Gospel and are aware of the challenges they might face.

"It is honorable that they give up all the comforts of home, and even safety in some sense, because of their belief that the message of the Gospel needs to go to the entire world. They are willing to make sacrifices to take that message," explained Pastor Price.

Depending on the country to which missionaries are sent, they can be exposed to crime and violence, disease, harsh climates, and other dangers.

"In countries where other religions are dominant, they may not want our faith there. So, there is always a risk, and missionaries are aware of that. But because of the urgency of the message, they take those risks," Pastor Price added.

Pastor Price offered words of comfort to Pastor Sullivan's family, who must be going through a difficult time.

"It is very shocking that someone could be kidnapped in front of everyone while preaching from the pulpit in a church. We are praying for him and his family. It was mentioned in church yesterday, and there were prayers for him. We earnestly pray for his safe return and for his family to have peace during this difficult time. It must be a very hard time for them," said Pastor Price.

The Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board (IMB) takes the risks associated with missionary work very seriously and takes various preventative measures to protect missionaries. The Motherwell Police Station in South Africa has launched an investigation into this kidnapping, with the police's Organized Crime Investigation Unit leading the investigation.
