Bucheon City, South Korea – In a concerted effort to elevate public awareness of both domestic and international literary awards, Bucheon City has significantly expanded its network of literary award exhibition corners. As of May 21st, a total of 16 locations now host these dedicated displays, including nine municipal libraries, two smaller community libraries, and five independent bookstores. This initiative underscores Bucheon's commitment to its identity as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature and aims to make literary arts more accessible within residents' daily lives.
At the heart of this promotional drive is the Bucheon Diaspora Literature Award. Established in 2019, this international literary prize was conceived to embody the city's literary values and identity. Since 2021, the award has held annual ceremonies and announced its laureates, with this year marking its fifth iteration. The award specifically champions Diaspora literature, focusing on narratives that illuminate the diverse experiences of migrants and refugees. Bucheon City continues to pursue various projects designed to bolster the award's international standing and influence.
The newly established exhibition corners are designed to share a wealth of literary award-related content with the public. They aim to foster an environment where literature can be easily encountered in various community spaces. The municipal libraries participating in this initiative include Sangdong, Suju, and Byeolbitmaru, among others. The smaller community libraries are the Sosa Station Choo-choo Library and the City Hall Wall Library.
A notable expansion has been seen in the involvement of independent bookstores, growing from just one last year to five in 2024. These include Shining Friends, Moaboal, Wonmidong Yong Bookstore, Geulhanspoon, and Hwamokine Chaekbang. Each location has tailored its exhibition to reflect its unique character, collectively broadening access to local culture through literary displays. This partnership between the city and independent bookstores is a strategic move to foster a more vibrant literary ecosystem.
The exhibitions showcase not only the winning books from each year but also provide comprehensive information such as author profiles, jury reviews, and the founding purpose and background of the literary awards. The displays are thoughtfully arranged in various formats, including bookshelves and tables, ensuring that citizens can freely browse and engage with the content.
Hwang Seung-wook, head of Bucheon City's Cultural Policy Division, emphasized the significance of this expansion: "The enlargement of literary award exhibition corners is a measure to make literature easily accessible in various spaces within the region." He further stated, "We plan to continuously promote cultural projects that connect libraries and independent bookstores." This ongoing commitment highlights Bucheon City's dedication to nurturing a rich literary environment for its residents, solidifying its position as a beacon for literary creativity and engagement.
