Montevideo, Uruguay – The Union of Meat Vendors (UVC) has expressed deep concern over ongoing labor disputes in the meatpacking industry, particularly as the holiday season approaches.
Hebert Falero, president of the UVC, told Subrayado (Channel 10) that recent labor actions have already caused disruptions in meat supply, particularly on weekends. "The union's actions have had the most significant impact on our ability to provide meat for barbecues," Falero stated. "While previous shortages in meat cuts were chaotic, the current supply chain is more stable."
The Federation of Workers in the Meat Industry and Related Activities (Foica) has been carrying out intermittent strikes throughout December in a bid to press their demands.
When asked about the potential consequences of escalated labor actions, Falero responded affirmatively. "Without a doubt, production would be severely affected," he said. "If Foica continues with their actions, the public will suffer the most. People who want to have a barbecue this holiday season may not be able to, as there simply won't be enough fresh meat available if slaughterhouses are shut down now."
Falero's comments highlight the growing tension between labor unions and meat vendors, with the public caught in the middle. The ongoing dispute threatens to disrupt the traditional holiday barbecue, a staple of Uruguayan celebrations.
