CHEONAN, SOUTH KOREA – Cheonan Central Library, in partnership with the Pulppuri Hope Foundation, has launched an engaging and timely program titled "Wise Earth Living," aimed at bolstering public understanding of the escalating climate crisis and fostering tangible actions towards environmental sustainability. The initiative, which commenced in April and will run until July, features a series of talks by prominent authors of climate-related literature and interactive events designed to connect the community with critical environmental issues.

Recognizing the urgent need to address the growing threat of climate change, Cheonan Central Library, under the leadership of Director Moon Hyun-joo, has curated a program that goes beyond simply providing information. By collaborating with the Pulppuri Hope Foundation, a local organization dedicated to community empowerment and social change, the library seeks to create a more profound and lasting impact on citizen engagement with environmental stewardship.

A central component of the "Wise Earth Living" program is the monthly "Culture Day" series, held on the last Wednesday of each month. These sessions feature intimate discussions with authors who have delved into various aspects of the climate crisis in their works. The lineup of distinguished speakers includes:

April 30th: Lim Young-shin, the author of "Climate Traveler," will share insights from her explorations of the tangible impacts of climate change across different regions and the human stories behind them. Her work often blends travelogue with environmental journalism, offering a compelling and personal perspective on a global issue.
May 28th: Lee So-yeon, the author of "I Decided Not to Buy Clothes," will discuss the environmental and social implications of fast fashion and advocate for more sustainable consumption habits. Her book has resonated with readers seeking to reduce their environmental footprint through conscious lifestyle choices.
June 25th: Kim Chu-ryeong, the author of "(A Science Teacher's Climate Change Report)," will provide a scientifically grounded yet accessible overview of the climate crisis, tailored to help the general public understand the complexities of climate science and its far-reaching consequences. As a science educator, Kim excels at demystifying complex data and making it relevant to everyday life.
July 30th: Kim Hyun-soo, the author of "Climate Wound," will explore the psychological and emotional toll of the climate crisis, addressing the growing concerns about climate anxiety and the mental health implications of environmental degradation. This session promises to be particularly relevant in fostering emotional resilience and promoting well-being in the face of environmental challenges.
In addition to these author talks, Cheonan Central Library is hosting an interactive quiz event at its information desk throughout the program period. The quizzes will focus on the themes and content of the featured books, encouraging participants to engage more deeply with the material. As an added incentive, the first 100 participants to complete the quiz successfully will receive eco-friendly souvenirs, further promoting sustainable practices and providing a tangible reminder of their engagement with the program. These souvenirs are thoughtfully selected to align with the program's environmental ethos, potentially including items like reusable shopping bags, bamboo utensils, or seed paper.

Director Moon Hyun-joo emphasized the significance of the collaboration with the Pulppuri Hope Foundation, stating, "It is truly meaningful to partner with a local foundation that shares our commitment to addressing the urgent issue of the climate crisis. We believe that by working together, we can amplify our impact and reach a wider audience within our community." She further expressed her hopes for the program, saying, "Our goal with 'Wise Earth Living' is to empower citizens to not only understand the gravity of the climate crisis but also to feel equipped and motivated to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives. We hope these sessions will spark meaningful conversations and inspire collective action towards a healthier planet."

The "Wise Earth Living" program comes at a crucial time, as South Korea, like many other nations, grapples with the increasing impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events and environmental degradation. Local initiatives such as this play a vital role in raising grassroots awareness and fostering a sense of collective responsibility. By providing a platform for dialogue with experts and offering practical ways for individuals to get involved, Cheonan Central Library and the Pulppuri Hope Foundation are contributing significantly to building a more environmentally conscious and resilient community. The program serves as a model for other libraries and community organizations seeking to engage their constituents on critical environmental issues, highlighting the potential of local collaborations to drive meaningful change. The anticipated participation of a diverse range of community members, from students to seniors, underscores the broad appeal and relevance of the program's themes.
