MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – In a remarkable rise, 17-year-old midfielder Germán Barbas has been named in Marcelo Bielsa's squad for the upcoming March FIFA international break. This call-up marks a significant milestone for the young talent, who just months ago was the youngest member of Uruguay's U-20 national team.

Barbas, currently playing for Peñarol in the Uruguayan Primera División, will join the senior national team for crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Argentina and Bolivia. His inclusion in the squad is a testament to his rapid development and the impression he has made on Bielsa.

Despite Uruguay's disappointing performance in the recent U-20 South American Championship, where they failed to qualify for the U-20 World Cup, Barbas's individual performance stood out. His composure on the ball, tactical awareness, and work rate have been praised by coaches and pundits alike.

Barbas made his senior debut for Peñarol in May 2024, coming off the bench for 11 minutes in a 3-1 victory over Progreso in the Torneo Apertura. Although his first-team experience is limited, his potential is undeniable.

"Germán is a player with immense potential," said a source close to the Uruguayan national team. "His ability to read the game and his technical skills are exceptional for his age. Bielsa sees something special in him."

Barbas's call-up has generated excitement among Uruguayan football fans, who are eager to see how he performs at the international level. His journey from the youth ranks to the senior national team is an inspiring story, and many believe he has a bright future ahead of him.

The upcoming matches against Argentina and Bolivia will be a significant test for Uruguay, and Barbas's inclusion adds an element of intrigue. His presence in the squad signals Bielsa's willingness to give young players a chance and his belief in Barbas's ability to contribute.

As Barbas prepares to join his national teammates, all eyes will be on him to see if he can make an impact and solidify his place in the squad. His story is a reminder of the talent emerging from Uruguayan football and the potential for young players to achieve great things.
