PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay – Eleven-year-old chess sensation Faustino Oro has embarked on another master tournament in his quest to become the youngest grandmaster in history. The Argentine prodigy, already the youngest international master ever, is competing in a round-robin tournament in Punta del Este, Uruguay, aiming for his first grandmaster norm.
To achieve the coveted grandmaster title, Oro must secure three norms, each signifying exceptional performance in a tournament. The Punta del Este event is a double round-robin featuring six masters, where each player faces the others twice. A grandmaster norm requires scoring 6½ points out of 10, a feat that could be accomplished by winning three games and drawing seven.
Oro's presence has generated significant excitement at the Magistral Uruguayo, with organizers arranging simultaneous exhibitions featuring the young star. The tournament boasts a strong lineup, including Argentina's top-rated players, Sandro Mareco and Diego Flores, Uruguayan grandmaster Andrés Rodríguez, Spanish grandmaster and popular YouTuber Pepe Cuenca, and emerging Mexican talent Sion Galaviz, 19.
Oro's Promising Start
In the first three rounds, Oro displayed marked improvement compared to his earlier tournaments this year. He has evidently learned from those challenging experiences, demonstrating enhanced positional play, defensive technique, and resilience.
In the first round, playing with black against Andrés Rodríguez, Oro achieved a favorable position out of the opening, showcasing his strong theoretical preparation. However, his preference for solid play sometimes leads him to overlook opportunities for more dynamic moves. The game eventually reached a balanced endgame, where Oro's tenacious defense secured a well-earned draw after 72 moves.
In the second round, Oro scored a stunning victory against six-time Argentine champion Diego Flores. Known for his complex and tricky style, Flores posed a formidable challenge. However, Oro maintained his composure, opting for a solid opening and gradually building an advantageous position. With Flores under time pressure, Oro capitalized on his advantage, securing a sensational win after 60 moves.
In his only game with white so far, Oro drew against Mexico's Sion Galaviz.
Tournament Standings and Outlook
After three rounds, Oro has 2 points, maintaining his chances of achieving a grandmaster norm. Sandro Mareco leads the tournament with three consecutive wins.
