Mother of Teenage Girl Killed in Encarnación Building Collapse Accuses Mayor of Mockery

ENCARNACIÓN, PARAGUAY - Karen Alfonso, the grieving mother of 15-year-old Monserrat Brites, who tragically died in the building collapse in Encarnación on April 9th, has launched a scathing attack on the city's mayor, Luis Yd. Alfonso alleges that the mayor has mocked her family by evading the municipal government's responsibility in approving the building's design.

In an impassioned interview with Radio 1000, Ms. Alfonso expressed her outrage, stating, "The mayor mocked my family by saying they have nothing to do with us. They are the ones who approved the construction, and frankly, they are avoiding responsibility."

Her accusations come in the wake of Mayor Yd's repeated denials of the city's culpability in the disaster. However, a report from the City Council's construction committee reportedly indicates numerous irregularities within the municipality's internal procedures regarding the building's approval process.

Adding to her distress, Ms. Alfonso revealed, "Until now, no one from the municipality has contacted me to clarify the facts of the incident."

Furthermore, Ms. Alfonso voiced her lingering questions about why her daughter was in the collapsed building with her grandmother at the time of the incident. She emphasized that Monserrat was under the legal custody of her father.

"I am going to file a complaint against my daughter's father," Ms. Alfonso asserted. "My daughter should have been with him. I have already filed the complaint, and I demand justice regarding why my daughter was there."

In a deeply personal revelation, she further explained, "On December 16th of last year, my daughter voluntarily left home after an argument and went to a friend's house. Her father called her and they went together. I reported this to the Encarnación Public Defender's Office, but neither my daughter nor her father attended the hearing. This part needs to be clearly investigated."

As the bereaved family grapples with their profound loss and anger, the focus is intensifying on the municipality's potential liability and the necessity of a thorough investigation into the cause of the devastating building collapse. The incident has ignited public debate regarding construction safety regulations and the accountability of local authorities in ensuring the well-being of their citizens. Authorities have yet to release detailed findings from their investigation into the structural integrity of the collapsed building and the approval processes it underwent. The community awaits answers as the grieving mother seeks justice for her daughter.
