Uzbekistan Champions Global Tourist Protection Standards, Takes Lead in International Safe Tourism Code Development

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan – Uzbekistan has solidified its position as a global leader in tourism safety and consumer protection by fully embracing the International Code for the Protection of Tourists (ICPT) and spearheading the development of an International Safe Tourism Code. This move underscores the nation's commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety, security, and quality for all visitors.

The ICPT, a unified global framework, provides a comprehensive set of guidelines to protect tourists, particularly during emergencies, and outlines their rights and responsibilities as consumers. By adhering to this code, Uzbekistan is reinforcing its dedication to enhancing legal protections and guarantees for tourists, aligning with its ongoing collaborative efforts with UN Tourism to strengthen global tourism standards.

"Uzbekistan is committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety, security, and quality for all visitors to our country," stated Aziz Abdukhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan. "The International Code for the Protection of Tourists not only enhances the rights and protections of travelers but also strengthens trust in Uzbekistan as a welcoming and reliable destination. Our alignment with these global principles will further support our vision of a modern, hospitable, and competitive tourism sector that benefits both visitors and local communities."

Uzbekistan's leadership extends beyond the adoption of existing frameworks. The nation has been a pivotal force in establishing the Committee for the development of an International Safe Tourism Code. This initiative aims to create a more robust and responsive framework for ensuring tourist safety in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic global travel landscape. Notably, Uzbekistan was unanimously elected as the Chair of this committee at its inaugural meeting in December 2024, highlighting international recognition of its proactive approach.

The International Safe Tourism Code is anticipated to address emerging challenges in tourism safety, including health crises, natural disasters, and evolving security threats. It will build upon the ICPT by providing more specific and actionable guidelines for governments, tourism businesses, and travelers.

Alicia Gomez, Director of Legal Affairs and International Standards at UN Tourism, emphasized the critical importance of these initiatives. "The global and interconnected nature of the tourism sector makes the harmonization of international standards even more vital. Both the ICPT and the future International Safe Tourism Code are invaluable tools in this endeavor," she said. "Uzbekistan's leadership in this area is crucial for ensuring the safety and confidence of travelers worldwide."

Uzbekistan’s proactive stance comes at a time when the global tourism industry is recovering and adapting to new realities. By prioritizing tourist safety and consumer protection, Uzbekistan is not only enhancing its reputation as a premier destination but also contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of the global tourism sector. The country's commitment to these standards is expected to attract more international tourists, boost economic growth, and foster stronger international partnerships.

The ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand these frameworks will ensure that all tourists, regardless of their destination, are protected and safe, contributing to a more secure and enjoyable travel experience for everyone.
