The Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines, in cooperation with the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), has announced that it will hold an online seminar on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, on the theme of "Revitalizing the Philippine Shipbuilding Industry."

The webinar, scheduled to take place via Zoom from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, will focus on in-depth discussions regarding the current state of the Philippine shipbuilding industry amidst rapidly changing commercial, technological, and geopolitical environments. It will also explore cooperative measures to strengthen the Philippines' ship production capabilities while addressing the challenges of the competitive global shipbuilding market.

According to a Facebook post by the Danish Embassy, this seminar is expected to maximize the potential of the Philippine shipbuilding industry and emphasize the importance of building strategic partnerships for sustainable growth. Key discussion topics are expected to include: △global shipbuilding market trends and outlook, △analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Philippine shipbuilding industry, △measures for technological innovation and the introduction of smart shipbuilding technologies, △direction of government policy and regulatory improvements, and △potential areas of cooperation between Denmark and the Philippines.

Current Status and Challenges of the Philippine Shipbuilding Industry

The Philippines was once a major shipbuilding nation in Southeast Asia, but in recent years has faced difficulties due to intensifying global competition and a lack of investment. According to the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Philippines still maintains competitiveness in the construction and repair of small and medium-sized vessels based on its strategic location and skilled workforce. However, a lack of high-value-added ship construction technology and infrastructure, outdated equipment, and complex regulatory procedures are hindering growth.

In particular, the aggressive market expansion and technology dominance strategies of major shipbuilding powerhouses such as China and South Korea are further threatening the Philippines' position in the industry. Furthermore, actively responding to global paradigm shifts such as strengthened environmental regulations and increasing demand for eco-friendly vessels has become an urgent task.

Denmark's Shipbuilding Industry Experience and Potential for Cooperation

Denmark is a leading maritime nation with advanced shipbuilding technology and plays a leading role in eco-friendly ship design and construction, as well as marine technology development. The Danish government actively supports the sustainable development of the maritime industry through various policies, and private companies are also strengthening their global competitiveness through innovative technology development and international cooperation.

This webinar is expected to be an important opportunity for the Philippines to share Denmark's advanced shipbuilding technology and policy experience, and to explore cooperation opportunities in various fields such as technology transfer, joint research and development, and human resource training. In particular, the Philippine government's ongoing maritime industry modernization plan and Denmark's eco-friendly ship technology are expected to create synergy effects and significantly contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the Philippine shipbuilding industry.

Need for Active Support from the Government and Related Organizations

Active policy support and regulatory improvements from the government are essential for the reconstruction and sustainable growth of the Philippine shipbuilding industry. Urgent measures include: △attracting investment for the modernization of shipyards and infrastructure development, △expanding education programs for technology development and human resource training, △simplifying complex and inefficient regulatory procedures, and △establishing support policies for the construction of eco-friendly vessels.

Furthermore, continuous efforts should be made to bridge the technological gap and secure global competitiveness through active international cooperation with maritime advanced countries such as Denmark. It is hoped that this webinar will be a meaningful first step for a new leap forward in the Philippine shipbuilding industry, and that continuous discussions will follow to explore concrete cooperation plans.

This Denmark-Philippines joint webinar is expected to provide an important forum for discussion on revitalizing the stagnant Philippine shipbuilding industry. Attention is focused on whether the Philippine shipbuilding industry can solve the challenges it faces and secure new growth engines based on Denmark's advanced experience and technology. It is hoped that the active participation and cooperation of all stakeholders, including the government, industry, and academia, will enable the Philippines to once again rise as a maritime power in Southeast Asia.
