Mojtaba Khamenei Injured in U.S. Airstrikes; "A Miracle He Survived" Amid Family Tragedy

TEHRAN — Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, was severely injured during the initial wave of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that claimed the life of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While Mojtaba has ascended to the highest seat of power in the Islamic Republic, reports indicate he remains in seclusion, recovering from significant physical trauma sustained during the bombardment.

Details of the Injuries
According to reports from CNN and the New York Times on March 11 (local time), Mojtaba Khamenei suffered a fractured foot and multiple facial injuries during the first day of strikes on February 28. Sources close to the situation describe his condition as stable but restricted.

"He sustained a leg fracture, bruising around his left eye, and minor lacerations across his face," a source familiar with the matter stated. Three Iranian government officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed to the New York Times that while Mojtaba’s injuries are serious—particularly to his legs—he remains conscious and alert. He has reportedly been moved to a high-security facility with strictly controlled communications to ensure his safety.

Official Confirmation and Family Losses
The Iranian government has officially acknowledged the injuries. Alireza Salarian, Iran’s Ambassador to Cyprus, confirmed in an interview with The Guardian that the new Supreme Leader was present at the site of the initial strikes.

"I have been informed that he sustained wounds to his legs, hands, and arms during the first day of the bombardment," Salarian said. "It is highly probable that he was hospitalized following the attack."

The ambassador further elaborated on the somber reality of the strike, noting that Mojtaba’s survival was "nothing short of a miracle" given the devastation. The airstrike targeted the residence of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, resulting in the deaths of six immediate family members, including:

-Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (The former Supreme Leader)
-Mojtaba’s wife and his teenage son
-The late Ayatollah’s daughter, son-in-law, and a 14-month-old infant

The "Janbaz" of Ramadan
At 56 years old, Mojtaba was officially elected as the Supreme Leader on March 8, following the vacuum left by his father’s death. However, his absence from the public eye has sparked intense speculation. Since his appointment, he has yet to deliver a public address or appear in person.

Ambassador Salarian addressed this absence, stating, "He does not appear to be in a sufficiently stable condition yet to deliver a formal speech."

In a symbolic move, Iranian state media referred to Mojtaba on March 9 as the "Janbaz of Ramadan." In Persian, Janbaz translates to a "disabled veteran" or a "sacrificing soldier" wounded in battle. This title is seen as an attempt by the regime to frame his injuries as a mark of revolutionary sacrifice, potentially bolstering his legitimacy during this period of extreme geopolitical instability.
