Seatrium Benoi Yard Dredging Operations Commence: A Key Driver for Singapore's Maritime Industry

According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), significant dredging operations are currently underway near Berth 2 at Seatrium Benoi Yard. This dredging is an essential process aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Seatrium Benoi Yard, one of the core bases of Singapore's shipbuilding and offshore industry, and ensuring the smooth entry and exit of large vessels.

Details and Purpose of the Dredging Operations

The current dredging operations are being carried out using a clamshell dredger. A clamshell dredger is an equipment that efficiently scoops up seabed sediments using a powerful clam-shaped bucket, making it particularly suitable for dredging in ports or shallow water areas. The dredged spoils are loaded onto flat top barges positioned alongside the dredger. After the dredging is complete, these barges will berth at the quay or the shipyard's slipway, where excavators will transfer the spoils ashore, and tipper trucks will then transport them to a designated disposal area within the yard.

The MPA stated that this dredging operation is expected to be completed by the end of this month. The dredging will be carried out to a designated depth within the work area. To ensure accuracy and stability of the operation, the clamshell dredger is equipped with a precise positioning system and is securely anchored using a 4-point anchor mooring system.

The primary purposes of this dredging can be broadly categorized into two. Firstly, it aims to secure sufficient water depth at Berth 2 of Seatrium Benoi Yard and its adjacent waters, enabling the safe berthing and departure of large vessels. Shipyards constantly build and repair large vessels, and in this process, sufficient water depth is directly linked to operational efficiency and safety. If the water depth becomes shallow due to sediment accumulation, the risk of vessel grounding increases, and navigation may be restricted, potentially disrupting shipyard operations.

Secondly, the dredging aims to maximize operational efficiency. Sufficient water depth facilitates various marine operations within the shipyard, such as vessel movements, component transport, and dry-docking/undocking, thereby shortening overall work times and reducing costs. Especially for Singapore, which is a vital maritime transport hub and a global powerhouse in the shipbuilding and offshore industry, maintaining such fundamental infrastructure is crucial for preserving national competitiveness.

Importance of Singapore's Maritime Industry and Seatrium's Role

Singapore has firmly established its status as one of the world's busiest ports and a global maritime hub. Geographically located at the gateway of the Strait of Malacca, it serves as a critical nexus for East-West maritime trade. This geographical advantage has provided a significant foundation for Singapore to develop various maritime-related industries, including shipping, shipbuilding, offshore oil and gas, and maritime finance.

Notably, Singapore's shipbuilding and offshore plant industry boasts world-class technology and production capabilities. Seatrium is a leading Singaporean shipbuilding and offshore company, formed in 2023 through the merger of Sembcorp Marine and Keppel O&M. This merger was a strategic decision to respond to the intensifying global competition in the maritime industry and proactively address new paradigms such as green transformation and digitalization.

Seatrium possesses global competitiveness in the construction and repair of high-value vessels and offshore structures, including deepwater drilling rigs, Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, and cruise ships. Benoi Yard is one of Seatrium's key production facilities, equipped with large docks and state-of-the-art facilities, playing a crucial role in executing complex and large-scale projects.

Environmental Considerations of Dredging Operations

Dredging operations always require careful consideration due to their potential impact on the marine environment. The process of removing seabed sediments can temporarily make the water turbid by generating suspended solids and may also affect marine ecosystems. However, the MPA and Seatrium are taking various measures to minimize these environmental impacts.

Generally, during dredging operations, measures include the installation of silt curtains for turbidity control, conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) regarding dredging timing and methods, and proper disposal of dredged material. In the case of contaminated sediments, specific waste treatment procedures are followed, or possibilities for recycling are explored. The current dredging operation at Seatrium Benoi Yard is also expected to proceed under the MPA's strict environmental regulations and supervision.

The dredging operations at Seatrium Benoi Yard are more than just civil engineering work; they represent a significant investment in the sustainable growth of Singapore's maritime industry. The sufficient water depth and improved operational environment secured through this work will greatly contribute to Seatrium maintaining its competitive edge in the global market and playing a leading role in the high-value offshore industry sector. Ultimately, this is expected to further solidify Singapore's economic development and its status as a maritime hub.
