Intel Accelerates Business Restructuring, TSMC Expected to Expand Foundry Orders

U.S. semiconductor giant Intel is embarking on an unprecedented business restructuring, sending new ripples throughout the global semiconductor industry. This major transformation by Intel, a long-time dominant player in the semiconductor market, is shaking up the foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) landscape, with a prevailing analysis suggesting that Taiwan's TSMC will be the direct beneficiary.

To overcome recent business setbacks and seek a new leap forward, Intel has been pushing its 'IDM 2.0' strategy. The core of this strategy is to maximize production efficiency and respond quickly to market changes by combining internal manufacturing with external foundry services. To this end, Intel is streamlining business processes and aggressively shedding unprofitable projects, trimming fat across the organization.

The company is also focused on strengthening its technological leadership by re-hiring key talent and recruiting new personnel. Through this powerful restructuring, the management team has set a goal to significantly reduce operating costs to around $17 billion this year and $16 billion next year.

This transformation by Intel presents a new opportunity for its competitor and partner, TSMC. As Intel increases its reliance on external foundries for high-performance chip production, TSMC's advanced process technology is becoming even more crucial. The market believes there is a high probability that TSMC will secure a significant portion of the production orders for Intel's next-generation CPUs, Panther Lake and Nova Lake.

Panther Lake is the first platform to apply Intel's cutting-edge 18A process node, with an announcement expected in the second half of this year and mass production slated for 2026. Since TSMC has already built technological trust by contract manufacturing some of Intel's chips, the possibility of winning additional orders for these next-generation chips is considered very high.

Industry experts predict that Intel's foundry strategy will be a key driver of TSMC's performance growth. Intel's realization that it cannot meet the surging demand for high-performance chips with its internal production capacity alone is expected to lead to a sustained trend of strengthening cooperation with external foundries like TSMC. This will boost the utilization rate of TSMC's advanced process lines and directly contribute to its revenue growth.

Yuanta Securities of Taiwan believes that Intel's ongoing business restructuring will have a positive impact on TSMC. It has rated TSMC with a 'Buy' investment opinion and a target price of 1,380 New Taiwan dollars, highly valuing the company's growth potential. All eyes are on whether TSMC will solidify its position as the undisputed leader in the foundry market amid the winds of change from Intel's restructuring.
