Harbin, China – In a stunning upset, 19-year-old Kim Chae-yeon has captured the gold medal in women's figure skating at the 2025 Harbin Winter Asian Games. Kim's victory marks a historic moment for South Korean figure skating, as she dethroned reigning world champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan.

Kim's journey to gold began with a strong performance in the short program, where she scored 71.88 points, placing her in second position. In the free skate, Kim delivered a flawless routine, earning a personal best score of 147.56 points. Her combined total of 219.44 points shattered her previous personal best and secured her the gold medal.

Sakamoto, who led after the short program, faltered in her free skate, falling on a jump and ultimately scoring 136.87 points. Her total score of 211.90 points was not enough to hold off Kim's impressive performance.

Kim's victory is a testament to her hard work and dedication. She has been steadily rising through the ranks, earning a bronze medal at the 2022-2023 Torino Junior Grand Prix Final, a silver medal at the 2024 Four Continents Championships, and a bronze medal at the 2024 Montreal World Championships.

"I didn't even think about the gold medal," Kim said after her victory. "I was just watching Sakamoto's performance, and I couldn't believe it when I found out I had won. I'm so happy."

Kim's coach, [Coach's name], praised her student's resilience and mental strength. "Chae-yeon is a very talented skater," [Coach's name] said. "She has a strong work ethic and she never gives up. I'm so proud of her."

Kim's gold medal is a major boost for South Korean figure skating. It is the first time that a South Korean woman has won gold at the Winter Asian Games since [Year]. Kim's victory is also a sign that South Korea is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in international figure skating.

Looking ahead, Kim will compete at the Four Continents Championships next week. She is hoping to carry her momentum from the Asian Games into that competition.

"I'm very happy with my performance at the Asian Games," Kim said. "I'm going to take this positive energy into the Four Continents Championships and try my best to perform well."

Kim's gold medal is a source of pride for all South Koreans. She is a rising star in the world of figure skating, and she has the potential to achieve even greater things in the future.
