HONOLULU, Hawaii – U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) joined forces with the Vietnam Veterans of America, Oahu Chapter 858, to host a poignant Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremony on March 28, 2025, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. The event served as a powerful tribute to the dedication and sacrifices of Vietnam War veterans and Gold Star families.

Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, commander of USINDOPACOM, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the enduring legacy of professionalism, duty, and readiness instilled by those who served in Vietnam. He underscored the strategic significance of Hawaii, noting its historical role as a cornerstone of American security in the Pacific, a lesson deeply understood by current service members thanks to the examples set by their predecessors.

"Here in Hawaii, 80 years after World War II and 50 years after Vietnam, we understand the strategic importance of this location," Admiral Paparo stated. "We understand what it means to be the vanguard of American security in the Pacific. And we understand these lessons because you taught them to us."

The ceremony also featured the distinguished performance of the University of Hawaii Navy ROTC Drill Team. Cadets from Kaiser High School JROTC played a vital role in the solemn laying of ceremonial wreaths, further honoring the fallen and those who served.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is observed annually on March 29, a date officially recognized through The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This significant day marks the withdrawal of the last U.S. combat troops from Vietnam and the return of the final prisoners of war from North Vietnam on March 29, 1973, signifying the end of direct American military involvement in the conflict.

The joint hosting of this ceremony by USINDOPACOM and the Vietnam Veterans of America underscores the ongoing commitment to remember and honor the service and sacrifices of those who served during one of the nation's most complex and challenging periods. It serves as a vital opportunity to connect past and present generations of service members, ensuring that the lessons and valor of the Vietnam War continue to inspire and guide those who safeguard American interests in the Indo-Pacific region today.

This collaborative event highlights the deep respect and gratitude held for Vietnam War veterans within the military community and the nation, reinforcing the importance of acknowledging their contributions and the profound impact of their service.
