Truck Drivers Stage Sit-In Protest at Seobuwon Ochang Mega Hub

Ochang, South Korea – A group of truck drivers employed at Seobuwon Ochang Mega Hub launched a sit-in protest early Wednesday morning, demanding better working conditions. The drivers, represented by the Chungbuk branch of the Public Transport Workers' Union and the Seobuwon branch of the Cargo Solidarity Union, are protesting against a significant reduction in transportation fees, cuts to existing benefits and allowances, and allegations of union suppression.

The dispute arose after the company, which outsources its logistics operations to LX Pantos and Daemyung Logistics, proposed a 400,000 won reduction in transportation fees. This, coupled with cuts to existing benefits and the inclusion of anti-union clauses in new contracts, has pushed the drivers to take drastic action.

"We agreed to a 200,000 won reduction in transportation fees and the forfeiture of existing benefits, but the company unilaterally declared a deadlock," said a representative from the Cargo Solidarity Union. "They are treating us as disposable assets, only concerned about profits."

The drivers' current contracts are set to expire on December 31st, leaving them in a precarious position. One driver, who has worked for the company for seven years, expressed deep frustration. "I've worked 10-hour shifts, every day, for seven years. Now, they want to cut my wages to the minimum and tell me to leave if I don't like it. This is about our livelihoods."

The union has called out the company's disregard for the drivers' well-being and the government's inaction. "Truck drivers are being driven to the brink," said Byun Yang-soon, secretary-general of the Chungbuk branch of the Cargo Solidarity Union. "The subcontracting system, coupled with the lack of support from the government, has created a situation where workers are neither recognized as employees nor have the rights of business owners."

The union has vowed to continue the sit-in protest until the company agrees to negotiate. A joint press conference is scheduled for 2 pm today, with the participation of branches from Gwangju and Daejeon.
