Russia-CIS Koreans Vow to Connect Roots Through Culture and Language

SEOUL—The Association of Koreans in Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), under the leadership of President Hyun Deok-soo, announced a comprehensive mid-to-long-term vision for the development of its member associations and the cultivation of the next generation following the conclusion of the 2025 World Korean Presidents Conference, hosted by the Overseas Koreans Agency. The vision, presented on October 3, 2025, emphasizes strengthening cooperation among Korean associations and promoting communication with future generations through cultural and educational initiatives.

The core strategy revolves around the widespread adoption of Korean language education and the popularization of K-Culture. The Association plans to implement various programs across the local Korean communities, including a Korean Speaking Contest, K-pop Competition, and Kimchi Making Experience, to foster a deeper understanding of Korean culture and a stronger sense of community among local youth and young adults.

Special Focus on Cultural Heritage

In a notable move, the Kyrgyzstan Korean Association introduced specialized programs tailored to its region's unique characteristics and the historical background of the Koryoin (ethnic Koreans in the post-Soviet states) community. These initiatives include operating a Korean Talking Club, offering education on Koryoin traditional funeral and memorial rites, and pursuing the creation of a 'Korea-Kyrgyzstan Friendship Park.'

These localized projects are designed to instill a strong sense of ethnic identity in the younger generation of Koryoin and are expected to significantly contribute to expanding cultural exchange with the local community in Kyrgyzstan.

Recognizing Leadership and Future Prospects

Hyun Deok-soo, who served as co-chairman of the World Korean Presidents Conference, was recognized for his contributions to strengthening the bond between the homeland and the overseas Korean community, receiving a Plaque of Merit from Overseas Koreans Agency Commissioner Kim Kyung-hyup.

President Hyun stated, "This conference has laid the groundwork for Korean associations in the Russia-CIS region to grow alongside the next generation." He underscored the importance of this sustained effort, adding, "Continuous exchange through the medium of culture and language will become the priming water that illuminates the future of the Korean community."

This renewed commitment to cultural and linguistic programs marks a significant step toward ensuring the enduring identity and vibrancy of the Korean diaspora across Russia and the CIS.
