SEOUL, South Korea – November 22nd marks "Kimchi's Day" in South Korea, and to commemorate the occasion, a special promotional video titled "The Power of Science Opens the Future of Kimchi" has been released. The video is a collaborative effort between Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University, known for his global Korean culture campaigns, and actress Park Ha-sun, who serves as the narrator.
The initiative, co-produced with the World Institute of Kimchi (WIK), falls under the Ministry of Science and ICT. Initially released in a Korean version spanning approximately 4 minutes and 30 seconds, the video is set to be translated into multiple languages and distributed sequentially to reach a wider international audience.
The core message of the video emphasizes that kimchi is more than just a traditional fermented food; it is an emerging core resource poised to grow through its integration with diverse industries, including bio-tech, medical, and cosmetics fields. Furthermore, it stresses the crucial need for the convergence of tradition and advanced scientific technology to solidify Korea's position as the country of origin for kimchi in the global era.
Professor Seo Kyoung-duk, who is also a global ambassador for WIK, expressed his motivation for the project, stating, "We wanted to widely promote the fact that kimchi is receiving global attention as a 'superfood' due to its recognized health functions, such as anti-obesity and anti-cancer properties." He also highlighted the global recognition of the dish, noting, "Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have designated and celebrate 'Kimchi's Day,' and Korean kimchi is currently exported to over 90 countries."
Actress Park Ha-sun shared her personal sentiment on participating, saying, "It is meaningful to convey the future of kimchi through my voice on the occasion of 'Kimchi's Day.' I hope many domestic and international viewers will show interest."
The World Institute of Kimchi and Professor Seo Kyoung-duk have consistently engaged in activities to promote the globalization of kimchi. Their past efforts include producing multilingual videos about kimchi for the international community and actively working to correct the English labeling of the main ingredient, advocating for the term "Kimchi cabbage." This latest video serves as a continuation of their dedicated efforts to advance kimchi's status as a global culinary and industrial asset.
