Chungnam Province Boosts Wildfire Prevention with Drone and AI Technology

Chungnamdo, South Korea – April 5, 2025 – In a proactive move to combat the escalating threat of wildfires, Chungnam Province is deploying cutting-edge drone and artificial intelligence (AI) technology across 135 identified high-risk areas. This intensified surveillance, announced on April 3rd, will continue until April 30th, coinciding with the national special wildfire prevention period. The initiative comes as the nation faces a ‘Severe’ wildfire disaster alert, prompting local authorities to bolster their preventative measures.

The core of this strategy involves utilizing a sophisticated drone video AI analysis system. Fifteen drone operation units from various cities and counties within Chungnam Province will conduct regular patrol flights over the designated vulnerable zones. These flights are specifically designed to identify potential wildfire triggers, such as unauthorized waste burning and forestry activities, with remarkable precision thanks to the integrated AI technology.

Beyond mere surveillance, the drones will be equipped with high-performance speakers to broadcast crucial wildfire prevention messages to individuals on the ground, significantly enhancing immediate on-site response capabilities.

A key component of this technological deployment is the use of autonomous drone stations. These unmanned systems enable drones to execute flights and landings automatically, ensuring continuous monitoring of high-risk areas along pre-programmed routes without the need for constant human intervention.

The captured aerial footage will be analyzed in real-time by AI algorithms capable of detecting early signs of wildfires, including smoke plumes, small embers, and the presence of unauthorized individuals in restricted areas. This rapid detection capability is crucial for swift intervention and containment.

Furthermore, in the unfortunate event of a wildfire outbreak, the drones will provide invaluable real-time situational awareness. Live video feeds from the affected areas will be instantly transmitted to a unified control system accessible to key stakeholders, including the Chungnam Provincial and municipal forestry departments, fire services, and the police. This seamless information sharing will facilitate a coordinated and efficient initial response, critical in preventing smaller fires from escalating into large-scale disasters.

Lim Taek-bin, Head of the Chungnam Provincial Land Management Division, emphasized the significance of this technological integration, stating, "By actively leveraging drone and artificial intelligence technology, we are significantly strengthening our proactive wildfire prevention efforts. Moreover, in the event of a fire, this technology will dramatically improve our initial response capabilities, ensuring that we can contain outbreaks quickly and prevent them from growing into major incidents. Our utmost priority is the safety and well-being of our residents, and we are committed to utilizing every available resource to minimize the risk and impact of wildfires."

This initiative by Chungnam Province highlights the increasing role of advanced technology in disaster prevention and management, setting a potential precedent for other regions facing similar environmental challenges. The combination of autonomous drone operations and intelligent video analysis represents a significant step forward in safeguarding communities and natural resources from the devastating effects of wildfires.
