Seoul, South Korea – Renowned mezzo-soprano Hwang Hye-jae will be gracing the stage of the Recital Hall at Seoul Arts Center on February 25th at 7:30 PM for a highly anticipated recital.
Hwang, celebrated for her rich emotional expression and excellent lyric delivery, has garnered critical acclaim from Wolfgang Fuhrmann, a critic for the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, who described her voice as "one that can only be touched."
After graduating from Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University with a degree in vocal performance, Hwang pursued further studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she earned a diploma in Lied, Oratorio, and Opera with the highest honors. Her exceptional talent was evident early on, as she won numerous awards, including second place in the German Lied Competition hosted by the Goethe-Institut and first place in the 13th Lee Dae-woong Vocal Competition. While studying in Berlin, she received the DAAD Prize in 2004 and was awarded scholarships from prestigious foundations such as Oska & Vera Ritter Stiftung and Paul Hindemith Gesellschaft Berlin e.V.
Hwang has performed extensively in both opera and concert repertoire. She has appeared in major opera houses in Korea, including the National Opera Company, Seoul City Opera, and New Seoul Opera, performing roles in operas such as "Rigoletto," "Cosi fan tutte," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "Carmen." She has also collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, Yangju City Philharmonic Orchestra, and Gunpo City Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist.
Currently, Hwang is an active performer in a wide range of genres, including oratorio, art song, and opera. She is also a dedicated educator, teaching at prestigious music schools such as Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and Sejong University.
Collaborative pianist for the recital, Jo Young-hee, is a highly accomplished pianist with extensive experience in accompanying vocalists and chamber ensembles.
