Paraguay's San Pedro Region Accelerates Dairy Production Revitalization

Dairy producers in the San Pedro region, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), are actively engaged in data acquisition and planning to establish the region as a hub for dairy product manufacturing.

Technical teams from the National Dairy Chain Promotion Program (FCL), under the Vice Ministry of Livestock of the MAG, along with the MAG's Planning Directorate, are providing technical assistance to local producers. These efforts focus on promoting investments to enhance productivity, increase income, and improve the quality of life for families involved in the dairy industry in San Pedro.

MAG officials have already completed technical inspections and verification visits to farms of producers benefiting from the FCL program. During these visits, technicians assessed the overall condition of the facilities, placing significant emphasis on the development of forage crops.

In this regard, producers received support in the form of turnip seeds and black oat seeds for dairy cow feed, considering the decrease in nutritional value and supply of feed during the winter. Cultivating forage crops, along with ensiling (silage) and other preservation techniques, ensures a continuous and balanced supply of livestock feed throughout the year. As optimal feed production for livestock consumption is essential for improving milk quality, technicians are prioritizing enhancements in forage crops.

Background and Importance of Dairy Revitalization

The San Pedro region, located in the central-eastern part of Paraguay, is an agricultural hub with a particularly developed livestock industry. While dairy farming has traditionally been relatively small-scale, recent government support and producer efforts are driving modernization and expansion. This movement is expected to play a crucial role not only in increasing production but also in boosting the local economy and raising farm incomes.

Due to its climatic conditions, Paraguay's dairy industry has always faced the challenge of stable feed supply, given the significant differences between the dry and wet seasons. Especially in winter, pasture production sharply declines, leading to poor nutritional conditions for dairy cows, which in turn results in reduced milk production and quality. To address these issues, cultivating winter forage crops such as turnip and black oat is a highly critical strategy.

Turnips grow relatively well in winter, providing nutritious roots and leaves, aiding cow digestion, and contributing to increased butterfat content in milk. Black oats are also hardy in cold climates and are effective in maintaining cow health and improving productivity due to their high protein and energy content. These crops are not only provided as fresh feed but can also be stored as silage, enabling a stable feed supply even during off-seasons. Silage technology minimizes nutrient loss and enhances storage efficiency, helping to reduce the economic burden on farmers.

Technical Support and Future Prospects

Beyond technical support, the MAG's FCL program offers producers multifaceted assistance, including market information, financial access, and support for forming cooperatives. Through this support, producers can reduce production costs, secure better distribution channels, and ultimately generate higher profits.

In particular, data acquisition and planning are essential for the modernization of the dairy industry. Systematic management based on accurate data, such as production volume, feed consumption, and cow health status, contributes to maximizing production efficiency and reducing risks. Furthermore, the Paraguayan government is reportedly exploring additional support measures for dairy development, including expanding irrigation facilities, modernizing cattle sheds, and investing in milk processing facilities.

The revitalization of dairy production in the San Pedro region is also expected to positively impact local job creation. It is anticipated to lead to the growth of related industries such as feed production, transportation, and milk processing, injecting vitality into the local economy. In the long term, it is projected to increase Paraguay's self-sufficiency in dairy products and even open up export possibilities to neighboring countries, thereby strengthening Paraguay's agricultural competitiveness.

If these efforts continue, the San Pedro region will soon establish itself as a key hub for Paraguay's dairy industry, significantly contributing to improving the quality of life for local residents.
