Boeing Huntsville-Made Missile Defense Component Named "Coolest Thing Made in Alabama" This Year

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA – A critical component for a missile defense system produced by aerospace and defense giant Boeing in Huntsville, Alabama, has been honored as the "coolest thing made in Alabama" this year.

Manufacture Alabama, the state’s trade association for manufacturers and their allied industries, announced Thursday, the final day of its annual "Manufacturing Madness" competition, that Boeing’s Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) seeker had received the award.

The PAC-3 seeker is a crucial part of the Patriot missile defense system’s interceptor missiles, enabling them to identify, track, and neutralize a variety of threats, including enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The Patriot system is used by the U.S. military and its allies worldwide, and Boeing produces the seeker as a subcontractor to Lockheed Martin.

"We are incredibly proud to produce the PAC-3 seeker in Alabama, a vital component of one of the world’s premier air defense systems," said Jim Bryan, vice president of Boeing’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense division. "This award is a great honor and a testament to the talented teammates in Huntsville who consistently deliver this critical, life-saving capability for soldiers and citizens around the globe."

Boeing recently announced that its Huntsville facility achieved a record production year in 2024, manufacturing over 500 PAC-3 seekers. The company also plans to expand its Huntsville site by 35,000 square feet this spring, which is expected to increase PAC-3 seeker production by up to 30%.

The aerospace behemoth’s product competed against a strong field to be named the "coolest thing made in Alabama." According to Manufacture Alabama, more than 130,000 votes were cast for 44 nominees across 10 industry sectors. The other three finalists were:

A.C. Legg’s Blend 10 Pork Sausage Seasoning – manufactured by A.C. Legg
ROHACELL® – manufactured by Evonik, a rigid foam used as a core material in sandwich structures
Tork Coreless High-Capacity Toilet Paper Roll White T7 – manufactured by Essity Professional Hygiene Advanced Manufacturing
"This competition not only celebrates the amazing products made in Alabama but is a testament to the people, companies, and communities driving innovation across our state," said Jon Barganier, president and CEO of Manufacture Alabama, in a press release.

Importance of the Patriot Missile Defense System and PAC-3 Seeker

The Patriot missile defense system is the U.S. Army’s primary surface-to-air missile system, playing a critical role in protecting friendly forces and key assets from a wide range of airborne threats, including enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. The PAC-3 is the latest evolution of the Patriot system, boasting enhanced interception capabilities and accuracy compared to earlier models.

The PAC-3 seeker acts as the "eyes" of the interceptor missile. Once launched, the interceptor uses this seeker to precisely detect and track its target, destroying it through a direct hit-to-kill approach. Achieving accurate strikes against high-speed targets like ballistic missiles requires advanced technology, and the PAC-3 seeker produced at Boeing’s Huntsville facility embodies this cutting-edge capability.

The selection as the "coolest thing made in Alabama" recognizes not only the exceptional manufacturing capabilities of Boeing’s Huntsville plant but also the vital role the PAC-3 seeker plays in national security and the defense of allied nations. Furthermore, the planned expansion of the production facility to increase PAC-3 seeker output underscores the United States’ proactive response to growing global security threats.
