Paraguay's forestry sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, transforming into a "thriving business" thanks to historical export performance and unparalleled investment attraction. With forest credit loans skyrocketing by over 1,700% and new records set in plywood exports, the Paraguayan forestry industry is proving its immense potential. Building on this momentum, the 5th 'Expo Madera 2025,' scheduled to take place from September 12 to 14 at the Puerto Cultural Center, is expected to be the most important showcase for the sector.
Record Growth and Strategic Expansion in the Forestry Sector
Indicators for the first quarter of 2025 clearly demonstrate the unprecedented vitality of Paraguay's forestry sector. In April alone, Paraguay exported over 2,700 tons of plywood, a 5% increase from the previous month. This signifies significant progress in the global reach of Paraguayan forestry, as emphasized by Cristina Goralewski, President of the National Forest Institute (INFONA).
The United States stands out as a major market for Paraguayan timber, accounting for $100 million in exports last year and remaining the largest market for plywood exports, exceeding $1.3 million as of April 2025. Other key export destinations include China (over $1.2 million), the United Kingdom (over $960,000), and Germany (over $850,000). The sector is also successfully diversifying its markets, including venturing into the Middle East through charcoal exports to new markets like Bahrain.
Credit loans allocated to forestry initiatives through the Paraguayan Financial Development Agency (AFD) have shown a remarkable 1,700% growth year-on-year, indicating massive investment in the sector. These investments primarily focus on responsible forest management, fast-growing afforestation, industrialization, technological capacity building, innovation, technological accessibility, and community inclusion.
The recent signing of a three-year cooperation agreement between INFONA and Kurosu & Cía. is expected to further accelerate these efforts. Experts predict that the Paraguayan forest sector, which has grown 15% over the past five years, has the potential to generate $2 billion in annual exports and create approximately 80,000 new jobs if expansion plans to 1.2 million hectares are realized. Furthermore, as of the end of May, the forestry sector's trade balance shows a continuous surplus of $288 million, with exports exceeding imports by 66%, reflecting the strong proportion of value-added production in the national economy.
Expo Madera 2025: A Vision Towards Sustainability and Innovation
Amidst this dynamic growth and investment flow, the Paraguayan Wood Industry Association (Fepama) is hosting the 5th Expo Madera. The exhibition aims to strengthen the value chain of the forest industry, promote business, and position Paraguay as a key player in the regional forest industry. The expo will bring together international delegations from Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, along with over 60 exhibitors, indicating increasing interest from these countries in Paraguay's forest model based on sustainable afforestation.
The core pillar of Expo Madera 2025 is sustainability. The organizers stated that a significant portion of timber produced in Paraguay comes from reforested areas, which dispels misconceptions about indiscriminate logging and emphasizes the country's commitment to environmental preservation and climate change mitigation. The event is further strengthening its institutional and strategic standing with support from key institutions such as the National Secretariat of Culture, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and the National Ports Administration.
In addition to the commercial exhibition, the event will offer a high-quality academic program with national and international experts covering topics such as product certification, carbon markets, and green finance. Experts predict that Paraguay could become a global leader in sustainable forest production, highlighting over 205,000 hectares of reforested areas in the eastern region and over 400 industrial companies (mostly sawmills) concentrated in the Caaguazú region.
Currently, the sector employs over 4,000 people. Furthermore, events like the 'Sustainable Forest Investment Conference' held in November 2024 are connecting the forest industry with sustainable finance and continuing discussions on carbon credits and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Efforts to strengthen sustainable capacity and identify market opportunities through programs like AL-INVEST Verde are also actively underway.
Expo Madera emphasizes efforts to combat climate change through reforestation and efficient resource use, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 visitors expected over the three-day exhibition. This expo is poised to become a key space for meeting, collaboration, and development for all stakeholders in the forestry sector. Through this, Paraguay is expected to present a model example of driving national economic development through the forest industry while upholding the value of environmental sustainability.
