CHEONAN – Governor Kim Tae-heum of South Chungcheong Province has pledged full support for Cheonan's growth into a metropolis of 1 million, vowing to accelerate the development of the Cheonan National Industrial Complex, a long-standing aspiration of the region. Governor Kim made these remarks at the "30th Anniversary Ceremony of the Pan-Cheonan Citizens' Committee for the Relocation and Development of the Livestock Research Institute and the Completion Ceremony of the National Industrial Complex Attraction Memorial Tower," held on June 9th at the Cheonan Northern Sports Center.
The event was organized to honor the dedicated efforts of the committee, which has tirelessly worked for 30 years to relocate the Livestock Research Institute and attract the national industrial complex, and to celebrate the successful achievement of the latter. Approximately 500 attendees, including Governor Kim, provincial and Cheonan city officials, committee members, and local residents, participated in a program that included commendations for distinguished service, a resolution rally, a chorus performance, and the unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the memorial tower.
Relocation of Livestock Research Institute and National Industrial Complex Development to Drive Cheonan's Future
The creation of the Cheonan National Industrial Complex is a large-scale project utilizing the site of the National Institute of Animal Science Livestock Research Institute, a long-cherished wish of Cheonan citizens. This initiative aims to attract high-tech industries such as semiconductors and displays, thereby promoting balanced regional development. The newly completed memorial tower symbolizes the aspirations of citizens who have worked to relocate the Livestock Research Institute and attract the national industrial complex, and it is expected to serve as an important milestone for Cheonan's future development.
The site of the Cheonan Livestock Research Institute was ultimately selected as a candidate for a new national industrial complex by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2023. The relocation project gained momentum with the completion of the total project cost adjustment by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in November of last year. This year, the Public Procurement Service conducted bidding announcements and on-site briefings, and major construction companies are reportedly forming consortia to prepare technical proposals.
Governor Kim: "Cheonan National Industrial Complex to Be a New Key Driver of Korea's Economy"
South Chungcheong Province plans to concentrate all its administrative and policy capabilities, in cooperation with the central government and Cheonan City, for the successful creation of the Cheonan National Industrial Complex. The province is particularly focused on attracting world-class large corporations that will lead future high-tech industries. Construction of the national industrial complex is scheduled to begin after the relocation of the Livestock Research Institute is complete. The estimated economic ripple effects of the industrial complex's creation include a production inducement of 14.2 trillion won and employment inducement of 58,000 jobs.
At the ceremony, Governor Kim expressed his strong commitment to Cheonan's development, stating, "As the strong governor of Chungnam, I will do my utmost until the Livestock Research Institute's relocation is finalized and the national industrial complex development truly breaks ground." He emphasized, "We will properly develop the Seonghwan National Industrial Complex so that Cheonan can grow into a metropolis with a population of 1 million."
Furthermore, Governor Kim presented a specific vision: "We will create an industrial complex that makes Cheonan synonymous with future mobility, and build a 500,000-pyeong new town in the hinterland." He specifically added, "Centering on Samsung, we will intensively attract the semiconductor industry, pulling the so-called 'semiconductor lower limit' that was up to Dongtan all the way to Cheonan, making it the center of the K-semiconductor belt." This suggests that Cheonan will grow into a key semiconductor cluster in South Korea.
Finally, Governor Kim reiterated his promise, saying, "We will mobilize all provincial administrative capabilities, including discussions with central ministries, to accelerate the relocation of the Livestock Research Institute and attract world-class large corporations leading advanced industries." He concluded, "We will make the Cheonan National Industrial Complex a new key driving force for the Korean economy." The creation of the Cheonan National Industrial Complex is drawing attention as a significant project that will contribute to both regional development and the revitalization of the national economy.
