Ulsan, South Korea – The Ulsan Immigration Office of the Ministry of Justice held a naturalization certificate conferral ceremony on May 20th in its grand auditorium, celebrating 24 individuals who have officially become citizens of the Republic of Korea. These new citizens, hailing from nine different countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, and the United States, reside in the Ulsan and Gyeongju regions and have now completed their journey to South Korean nationality.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the diverse group, who have fulfilled the rigorous requirements for naturalization, demonstrating their commitment to integrating into South Korean society. The process typically involves a comprehensive review of an applicant's residency period, Korean language proficiency, understanding of Korean culture and history, and demonstration of a stable livelihood.
Among the new citizens was Mr. Lam Thanh Hao, 31, from Vietnam, a distinguished researcher at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), who was granted special naturalization for his exceptional talent. Mr. Lam expressed his profound impressions of South Korea, stating, "Korea possesses an advanced scientific and technological research environment, making it an ideal place for long-term research activities and career development." He further emphasized his dedication to fostering international cooperation, adding, "I will do my utmost to help outstanding foreign talents realize their dreams in Korea and contribute to Korean society through international collaboration."
Mr. Lam's case highlights South Korea's growing emphasis on attracting and retaining highly skilled foreign professionals to bolster its competitive edge in key industries. The Ministry of Justice has streamlined certain naturalization processes for individuals with specialized expertise who can contribute significantly to the nation's economic and technological advancement.
To further celebrate the diverse contributions of its international residents, the Ulsan Immigration Office is hosting a special exhibition titled "Embracing Homeland: World Poetry, Essay, and Photo Exhibition" in the main hall lobby of its office. The exhibition, running until May 27th, is held in commemoration of World Migrants' Day, which falls on June 20th. This annual observance aims to recognize the contributions of migrants worldwide and to address the challenges and opportunities of migration. The Ulsan exhibition provides a platform for foreign residents to share their cultural heritage and personal stories through various artistic mediums, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of global diversity within the local community.
The naturalization ceremony and the accompanying exhibition underscore South Korea's evolving approach to multiculturalism and its efforts to create a more inclusive society. As the nation continues to globalize, the integration of foreign residents and the celebration of their diverse backgrounds are becoming increasingly vital for sustained growth and social harmony.
