Cheonan Dujung Library (Director Lee Chung-mi) announced on the 9th of April its implementation of the 'Bookstart' program, a national initiative aimed at fostering a love of reading from a young age. The library will cater to infants and toddlers born between 2019 and 2025, along with their parents, by distributing carefully curated book bundles tailored to different developmental stages and offering enriching educational programs.
The cornerstone of the Bookstart program is the distribution of free book bundles. Each bundle will contain two age-appropriate picture books selected by experts in early childhood literacy, along with a comprehensive guidebook for parents. This guidebook will provide valuable insights into the benefits of early reading, offer practical tips on how to engage young children with books, and suggest interactive activities to enhance the reading experience. The distribution of these thoughtfully assembled book bundles will commence on April 23rd at 10:00 AM and will be available at designated library branches across Cheonan. Parents are encouraged to visit their nearest participating library to claim their child's Bookstart pack.
In addition to the book bundle distribution, Dujung Library has organized a series of engaging educational programs designed to empower parents and caregivers in nurturing their child's literacy development. The program schedule includes insightful lectures and interactive workshops led by renowned authors and experts in early childhood education:
May 21st & 28th: Author Kim Eun-ha will lead a two-part series focusing on "The World of Children's Language and Literacy Development" and "If Books and Childcare Exist Between Parents and Children." These sessions promise to equip parents with a deeper understanding of how children acquire language skills and the crucial role that reading plays in this process. Kim Eun-ha will also explore practical strategies for integrating books seamlessly into daily routines and fostering a positive reading environment at home.
September 17th: Author Park Chae-ran will present a session titled "From Picture Books to Reading Books." This lecture will delve into the developmental progression of children's reading abilities, highlighting the transition from visual storytelling in picture books to more complex narrative structures in early reading books. Park Chae-ran will offer guidance on selecting appropriate books for each stage and provide tips on how to support children as they embark on their independent reading journey.
September 24th: An engaging workshop on "Healing Childcare Through MBTI and Picture Books" will be held. This unique session will explore the intersection of personality types (using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a framework) and children's literature. Participants will learn how to select picture books that resonate with different personality traits and discover how shared reading experiences can foster emotional connection, understanding, and healing within the family.
Registration for these enriching programs will open on April 16th at 10:00 AM and can be conveniently accessed through the Cheonan City Libraries website (누리집). Interested parents and caregivers are advised to register promptly as spaces may be limited.
Director Lee Chung-mi emphasized the library's commitment to promoting early literacy, stating, "Through the Bookstart initiative, we aim to provide families with increased opportunities to engage with books from the earliest stages of a child's life. We sincerely hope that the program's book bundles and educational offerings will serve as valuable resources, supporting parents in their home-based reading guidance and overall childcare endeavors."
The Cheonan Dujung Library's proactive implementation of the Bookstart program underscores the city's dedication to fostering a lifelong love of reading and promoting the intellectual and emotional development of its youngest citizens. By providing free, age-appropriate books and empowering parents with the knowledge and skills to nurture early literacy, the library is investing in the future success and well-being of the community. This initiative aligns with broader national and international efforts recognizing the profound impact of early reading on cognitive development, language acquisition, and overall academic achievement. Research consistently demonstrates that children who are exposed to books and reading from an early age tend to have larger vocabularies, stronger comprehension skills, and a greater aptitude for learning throughout their lives. The Bookstart program serves as a vital bridge, connecting young children and their families with the transformative power of books and laying a solid foundation for a future filled with literacy and learning. The anticipated positive impact on Cheonan's families and the community as a whole makes this initiative a noteworthy and commendable undertaking.
