The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has proudly announced its partnership with the "Zero Plastic 2040 Campaign," a nationwide initiative dedicated to curbing the use of single-use plastics on Peru's beaches and raising awareness about environmental stewardship within the tourism sector.

The campaign's recent event at Agua Dulce beach in Chorrillos, Lima, saw the enthusiastic participation of nearly 300 young volunteers from the ASEZ WAO organization, alongside prominent officials including Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Desilú León; Congresswoman Nilza Chacón; Vice Minister of Environmental Management, Edgar Romero; Director of ASEZ WAO, Jorge Luis Maza; and representatives from the Municipality of Chorrillos and the Ministry of Education.

Volunteers diligently collected waste and debris from the beach, underscoring the importance of collective action in preserving Peru's natural beauty.

"For Mincetur, it's a privilege to join initiatives that educate the public about the care of our environment and natural resources," stated Minister León. She passionately called for a heightened sense of environmental consciousness among authorities, tourism entrepreneurs, merchants, service providers, and citizens alike. "I urge everyone to join causes like this, with the commitment and responsibility to ensure our beaches are not synonymous with pollution," she emphasized.

The "Zero Plastic 2040 Campaign" aims to instill in tourists a deep appreciation for the natural wonders they visit, so that these treasures can be enjoyed by future generations. "When Peru offers tourism, it provides not only culture, tradition, and gastronomy, but also breathtaking natural landscapes, which compel us to protect them," Minister León added.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism

Mincetur's active involvement in this beach cleanup campaign demonstrates its unwavering commitment to responsible tourism—an approach that prioritizes visitor satisfaction while safeguarding natural and cultural resources, and fostering sustainable local development.

This initiative also bolsters Peru's reputation as a premier tourist destination, renowned for its sustainable experiences that resonate with global trends emphasizing environmentally conscious practices.

Recognizing the tourism sector as a vital engine of the national economy, yet vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, Mincetur understands the critical need for campaigns that promote environmental stewardship.
