The Era of "Hands-Free Departure" from Gangnam: Enhanced Convenience with the Resumption of City Airport Easy-Drop Service

The "Easy-Drop" service, which allows for airline ticket issuance and baggage check-in at the Korea City Air Terminal in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, resumed on the 29th. The new Easy-Drop branch in Samseong-dong, which opened through the collaboration of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Incheon International Airport Corporation, is expected to significantly improve convenience for travelers using Incheon Airport.

The Easy-Drop service is a system where passengers can complete check-in procedures, including issuing boarding passes and checking in luggage, just like at an airport check-in counter. Using this service allows travelers to proceed directly to the security screening area upon arrival at Incheon Airport without additional baggage handling or check-in procedures. This greatly helps reduce airport congestion and shortens departure times. A particular advantage is the ability to check in luggage in advance before heading to the airport, reducing the physical burden and allowing for a more relaxed start to the journey.

A Splendid Revival of a Service Halted by COVID-19

The Easy-Drop service was previously operated at the Korea City Air Terminal but was unfortunately suspended in 2020 due to the terminal's closure caused by a sharp decline in international travelers during the COVID-19 pandemic. As social distancing measures eased and demand for overseas travel surged, the government and airport authorities have actively promoted the resumption of the Easy-Drop service to enhance traveler convenience. The opening of the Samseong-dong branch is the fruit of these efforts, significant in that it allows travelers to once again enjoy the convenience of the pre-pandemic era.

Starting on the 29th, the service is available to international passengers departing from Incheon Airport on major Korean airlines, including Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, and T'way Air. From June 1st, Jin Air passengers will also be able to use the service, allowing more travelers to benefit from Easy-Drop. Operating hours are from 7 AM to 4 PM, and the service is closed on Wednesdays and public holidays. This appears to be a measure considering airline baggage processing times and flight schedules, so travelers planning to use the service should check the operating hours in advance.

Passengers who check in their luggage in Samseong-dong can travel directly to Incheon Airport via airport limousines operated by the Korea City Air Terminal. This limousine service will minimize travel time to Incheon Airport and allow for comfortable, luggage-free travel, making the start of the journey even more enjoyable.

Expanding Easy-Drop Network Beyond Samseong-dong to the Entire Country

Currently, the Easy-Drop service is also available in various locations besides Samseong-dong, Seoul, further improving accessibility. In Seoul, Easy-Drop services can be used at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel near Hongdae Entrance Station and near Myeongdong Station (Myeongdong 2-ga 1-21). As Hongdae and Myeongdong are popular tourist destinations and transportation hubs for both foreign and domestic travelers, service operations in these areas are expected to significantly enhance traveler convenience.

Easy-Drop service is also provided in Yeongjongdo, Incheon, which is close to Incheon International Airport. Inspire Resort and Paradise City Hotel are primarily used by airport transfer passengers or travelers staying near the airport, and the Easy-Drop service allows them to proceed directly to the airport without the burden of check-in. This will increase the convenience for hotel guests around the airport and ultimately contribute to strengthening Incheon International Airport's competitiveness.

The Future and Expected Effects of Easy-Drop Service

The resumption of the Easy-Drop service is expected to positively impact the entire South Korean tourism industry, beyond just travel convenience. Streamlining departure procedures will alleviate airport congestion and reduce passenger waiting times, improving the overall airport experience. This will contribute to enhancing Incheon International Airport's international standing.

Furthermore, with the possibility of luggage-free travel, travelers can utilize their time more freely before heading to the airport. They can enjoy additional activities such as shopping, dining, and sightseeing, which is expected to help revitalize the economies of Seoul and Incheon. Especially for foreign tourists, this service will make the beginning and end of their trip to Korea more convenient and pleasant, thereby increasing their satisfaction with their visit.

There is also a high possibility that the operating airlines and locations for the Easy-Drop service will be further expanded in the future. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Incheon International Airport Corporation are expected to continuously improve the service based on traveler feedback and strive to enable more citizens and foreign tourists to use the Easy-Drop service. The era of "hands-free departure," expanding from Gangnam to the entire country, is expected to become the new standard for travel in South Korea.
