In a stunning upset, world No. 170 Joe Highsmith of the United States clinched his first-ever PGA Tour title at the Cognizant Classic held at PGA National Resort's Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  

Highsmith delivered a spectacular final round, carding a 7-under-par 64 to finish with a total score of 19-under-par 265. This impressive performance secured a two-stroke victory over fellow Americans Jacob Bridgeman and J.J. Spaun, who tied for second place.

A Remarkable Turnaround

Highsmith's journey to victory is a testament to perseverance. Since his PGA Tour debut last year, he had struggled to find consistency, missing the cut in 18 of his 33 starts. He narrowly retained his tour card for this season after a late surge in the fall series.

This year, Highsmith continued to face challenges, with three missed cuts in five events and a best finish of T17 at the Mexico Open. However, he turned his fortunes around with back-to-back 7-under-par rounds in the final two days of the Cognizant Classic.

Prize Money and Perks

Highsmith's victory earned him a substantial prize of $1,656,000, surpassing his total career earnings on the PGA Tour to date. He also secured several valuable perks, including:

A two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
An invitation to the Masters Tournament.
Eligibility for signature events.
A significant jump in the FedExCup rankings from 123rd to 10th.
A dramatic rise in the world golf rankings.
Other Notable Performances

Korean-American Michael Kim, seeking his second PGA Tour win, finished T6 with a score of 15-under-par 269. Jake Knapp, who shot a remarkable 59 in the first round, also finished T6. Korean-American Doug Kim and Australian-Korean Min Woo Lee tied for 11th place with a score of 13-under-par 271.
